Hello (: my name is Kyla
Just wondering if anybody else is applying to MSCC's 2019 nursing program? The application opens up in a couple of weeks and I have been pretty nervous...I have never applied to a nursing program before and I hear that it is pretty competitive. If anybody would like to share their experience(s) that would be awesome!
For those of you applying for this fall, have you had trouble getting in touch with anybody in the nursing department? I have tried calling a few times just to make sure I am not missing anything before the January 31 deadline, but have not been able to reach anyone I also want to be sure I am calculating my GPA correctly because I have just over 100 credit hours and I'm not *positive* specifically which courses will be used for the calculation.

Have you tried talking to a "Completion Coach"? I don't know if they can help you with that .
I'm thinking about making an appointment to see a completion coach so they can look at my credits from another school, and tell me if they all transfer. (I think so, but I just want to make sure).
This was on the Motlow website: "The grade point average is calculated using only college courses required by the nursing program." So I believe only the courses you took that are part of the prerequisite classes (BIOL 2010,2020 MATH 1530, ENGL 1010 etc) will be calculated.
Does anyone know if Motlow offer Info sessions about their program. Just curious, cause I know NSCC and MTSU do.
I've not tried speaking with a completion coach, so I'll have to look into it!
I think I am just a little confused as to *exactly* which courses are used. If I'm correct, it seems as if it is calculated using A&P 1 and 2, Micro, Eng 1 and 2, Psych, Thea, Comm, and Stats, are there any others? I have already taken all of those but I don't know if I am missing any when I am attempting to calculate my score. I have also taken the nursing calculations course but I'm not sure if that counts.

Nickie Fanning is the secretary for the nursing dept. She would be the best person to speak with. I can say they have been overwhelmed trying to get a clinicals schedule squared away. If you have had any of these courses: Art, Speech, Microbiology, Stats, AP l & ll, Psychology, or English Comp l, they would be used to calculate your GPA. For instance, if you have had art and drama - 2 humanities courses- the highest grade would be used for calculation. Nursing Calculations does not count. That's one they changed on me mid course.

I would NEVER discourage anyone from speaking with a Completion Coach. They are a good "in" and source of some information, however, they just usually do not have the most up-to-date information related to the nursing program. Personally, starting out I was signed up for 2 different classes under their direction that was not what I needed (for nursing) on two separate occasions. Questions I have had either went unanswered or took days/week to get a reply. I would love to say this issue was related to my assigned coach, but this has happened with other faculty as well. They would be best when trying to see what courses will transfer from another college. In regards to nursing information sessions, they are normally held in October. Although, times and dates doesn't seem to be made widely known. I will say I got a 1.5 day heads up for the meeting they had in 2016 from my completion coach. Nothing like asking off work at the last min.
@wkrbee Thank you again for all of your advice and the information you've been providing! How is your second semester going so far?
Today I found out that I am no longer eligible for financial aid due to having too many credit hours, but it definitely won't stop me from attending the nursing program if I am lucky enough to get accepted! I want to start saving up while I am able, so I am trying to get an idea of how much it is going to cost me each semester. Aside from tuition costs, are the following (for the most part) the only other costs that can be anticipated?
Uniform and supplies*: $200
Drug Screen and Background Check $100 (annually)
Health Physical*: $100
TB Skin Test: $10-20 (annually)
CPR Certification*: $50-75
Textbooks: First year/LPN transition: $1200; Second year: $300
Licensing Exam Fees*: $300 (last semester)
Fingerprint Scan for Licensure* $45
Nursing Pin*(optional): $50-150 (last semester)
NCLEX Review Course (recommended)* $250-350
Kzmmx, Would you mind if I asked what type of financial aid you applied for? Costs... The list looks pretty good. I would add in money for gas, food and the occasional hotel room if your clinical site is 1.5 hrs away. Make sure the CPR cert is through the American Heart Association as they will not accept another company. How is the semester going you ask? Just trying to taking one day at a time.
@wkrbee I don't mind at all. I am typically eligible for grants like the pell grant and the TSAC grant, and I was hoping to get the reconnect grant now that I am back at a community college and am over 25 years old, but I received an email today stating that I am no longer eligible for any financial aid due to exceeding the credit hour limit (I changed my major to nursing about a year ago after I started working in a hospital). And I wish you the best this semester! You'll be half-way through after this one :)
