Hello (: my name is Kyla
Just wondering if anybody else is applying to MSCC's 2019 nursing program? The application opens up in a couple of weeks and I have been pretty nervous...I have never applied to a nursing program before and I hear that it is pretty competitive. If anybody would like to share their experience(s) that would be awesome!
@myjourney2nursing Have you taken your HESI? If so, how did it go?
I'm going crazy not being in school this semester...even while working overtime.
Is it April yet?? ??

Hi there.
Sorry it's taking me long to answer you. I don't receive notifications in my email anymore when someone post in this thread. I wonder if this was changed when they revamped this website.
Anyhow, I will be taking the HESI in less than 2 weeks!! I actually didn't study much for it yet. The reason is because I was studying for the TEAS exam instead, which I took not too long ago at NSCC.
I did good on the TEAS. I believe that studying for the TEAS kinda prepares me for the HESI (at least I hope), since it is pretty much the same stuff, minus "Life and Physical Sciences/Chemistry and Scientific Reasoning".
But I will definitely try to study for the next few days.
I have a few questions about the HESI, I was wondering if you don't mind sharing your experience. How much time do they give you to complete the exam? Are the sections timed separately or all together? The TEAS was timed separately, which I didn't like. For instance in my case, I had leftover time in a couple of sections. I wish I could've used that leftover time for another section, if the test was not timed separately. On the bright side, we could take breaks in between sections, since the timer stops.
No biology, right? So, they are not gonna ask about cells and parts of it, mitosis, DNA, genetics? I should focus only in A&P.
Is there any geometry involved in the Math section of the Hesi? I did have geometry in the TEAS. ugh
Do we need to memorize formulas? Like for example the formula to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
I know there will be questions about conversions. Is it a good idea to try and memorize the conversion table, or do they give that info on the test, and we just need to make the calculations?
I know you took your test at MTSU and you had to submit your results to the Nursing department. Do you or anyone here know if when we take the test at Motlow if the results are automatically sent to the nursing department?
I know that Motlow requires a minimum score of 80 on the Hesi and that makes me nervous. Do you know when in April, they start letting people know who got accepted and who got denied in the program?

@myjourney2nursing No worries!
I'm glad that your TEAS exam went well! In regards to the HESI, there was definitely more than enough time to complete the exam. I think the time limit is 4 hours for the entire exam, but you are tested on each topic in the order of your choice, and there is no time limit for each individual topic.
The math was *mostly* ratio proportion, but there were so a couple of measurement conversions (mL, oz, tsp, tbsp, etc), military time questions, Roman numeral questions, and very basic algebra. I memorized a bunch of formulas but did not even need them, and I did not personally have any temperature conversions on my exam.
And no, you do not need to worry about biology for Motlow, just A&P! For the A&P section it was mostly the bigger concepts (stuff you would learn in A&P I vs A&P II).
Other than those two topics, I believe you are just tested on reading/grammar/vocab. Definitely look up commonly tested terms for the vocabulary section of the HESI! I did this after taking it and most of them that I found online were on the exam. There's a ton of flashcard sets on Quizlet.
I had to submit my scores to Motlow myself since I took it at MTSU, but I called them a few weeks later just to be sure the received them. I am not sure if testing at Motlow means that they will automatically have access to your scores, so I would check with them and get confirmation that they were received just in case. I would hate for something at silly as not receiving your scores prevent you from being a qualified candidate!
Don't let the minimum score of 80 discourage you. I promise, as long as you take your time on the reading section, brush up on A&P (mostly the basics), and make sure you have ratio proportion down for math, you will be fine!! After I submit this I will add some links of flashcards that would help! And yes in April I believe both those who were accepted or denied will be notified through e-mail. I think it is towards the end of April.
Most of these terms were on my exam. I found these on Quizlet so I did not make these myself. The last set has way more info than I needed when I took mine, but it might be a good idea to go over them just in case ?

Hi guys! I was wondering if anyone had made a post yet, but hadn’t had time to check.
Glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t taken the HESI yet. I’m really worried about it, since I’ve only started A&P 1 this semester! What day are you scheduled to take yours at Motlow?
Thank you so much for the quizlet links to help study!!

Thank you for all the tips on the Hesi and for sharing those Quizlets links. You are very kind!!
To be honest, I can't wait to be done with test taking lol. I know that if we get accepted into a nursing program, our life will be like studying non stop lol... but from March to August at least, we can have a little break. Well, a break from studying at least. I still need to work... and I am gonna try to work some extra hours to save up some $ and pay for school. (I don't qualify for grants )
Do you already work in the medical field? I work with people (customer service, to be more specific), but not in a medical setting for sure. This will be a career change for me. Unfortunately I found out a little late in life what I really want to do. I think I will be ok, but I have this slight fear inside me that I will feel out of place for 2 reasons: one, because I never worked in the medical field and two, because I am a non traditional student. If I get in, I'll be one of the old ones in class lol
Yeah I agree...waiting until April is torture. ?

Hi there.
My test is on March 5th. Are you applying somewhere else too or just Motlow?
?
@myjourney2nursing No problem, I hope they help! And don't worry, I am a non-traditional student as well and I'm sure there's others! And yes I work in the medical field but I work in the IV room at the hospital so I'm not on the floors very often. There's tons of nursing students who do not have any medical field experience though, so I am sure you will be fine, especially since you are already used to working with people. And I agree about the studying non-stop...it's like we get so excited and anxious about being accepted, only to find ourselves studying all the time and not having a life ? we just have to stay focused on our goals! And nice to meet you @Looking2nurse ?

Mine is March 8th. Bright and early at 8am ? It was the only day I knew for sure I would have off of work, lol.
Only applied to Motlow so far. I think I have to finish A&P 1 and possibly another class before being able to apply to Columbia state. Not sure though
Best of luck on your Hesi! You too @kzmmx ?

@wkrbee Awesome, I will definitely try that if I get in! Waiting until April feels like an eternity...
