Mother of 2 confused about Nursing school

Published

Hello everyone,

I am a mother of two children (5 and 9). I live in new york i went to a community college i was first a nursing major until i found out there was a 3 yr waiting list and the dept was discouraging students from applying, i needed up graduating with an AAS in liberal arts with a concentration in Health and Education. I am now in a 4yr school majoring in sociology and taking my nursing pre-reqs. to possibly go into an accelerated program. Being a mother two i am concerned of the loans and debt and 12 hr clinicals and just being able to go through the program and finishing. I have my fiancé (who also is in college) and mother who is a nurse also (who discourages me everyday from becoming a nurse) as a support but i am constantly hitting these roadblocks. I was also considering social work or teaching if i couldn't go to nursing school.

Any advise would help plz.

Thank you

You have to decide your own life/educational path. My only advice is that if you're that concernced about getting aid while going to school then do NOT get married while in school.

I understand your concerns. I have been wanting to go to nursing school for years now, and it just hasn't worked out. My husband is on the road all the time, and when my kids were smaller, I knew I couldn't handle school and them by myself. I had no support system here, and no money for childcare. I didn't want to go to school only to get kicked out for missing days due to illness, snow days, etc. This was too important to me. But now my kids are older and both in school (10 and 7). I have been slowing taking a class here and there and will finish my prereqs this year. And this summer my father retires and is moving near us, so he will help with the kids so I won't have to worry about relying on childcare or a stranger (I have been burned by unreliable sitters in the past). It's been a long road, but I'm not giving up. You can do it too, it this is really what you are passionate about.
