Pursuing RN with a Non-Nursing Bachelor's Degree
Hi all I have the same BA as you in communication disorders. I also live in NYC. You should look into CUNY colleges. Either way for any nursing program IVY league or city college you need to have the pre-reqs in order to continue with that, degree. You have to follow your heart and what u want to do. No one is going to live your life for you. If your not sure about nursing but want to be in health care. How about health service administration or even PA school.

Is nursing school possible with RA.
You are right it's been a few months since my diagnosis. I do understand the hardship that it will take and it brings. There are times where washing my hair (and my daughter's) is a struggle. I recently met with a new doc and we are trying some new interventions...PT and new meds. Hopefully it works. For now I am taking my pre-reqs that can also apply to a medical nutrition or health service administration degree IF my option for nursing school is unattainable.

Is nursing school possible with RA.
I understand the hardship that it will take to get thru school and the rest of my career going forward. There have been so many instances that I have experienced that gave me a greater respect for healthcare professionals and the want to go into nursing. Why nursing I was asked in an earlier post...i can come out with all the corny answers that ppl might want to hear, but the truth is to not only give my children a better future but also to peruse a want i have inside to help others. I have seen many helped and many done wrong by healthcare professionals and I want to be part of the change. My mother is a nurse my godmother was a nurse, it has been something I have wanted for a long time but never had the strength to peruse due to fear of failure and lack of support. If i give up because of my RA what example would I be to my son (who has aspergers) and my daughter who is support to see a strong figure......thats how I think of it.

You post honestly gave me inspiration. I continue to tell myself that i am stronger than this diagnosis but it does at times become overwhelming. But i do thank you for all the advise, and i have realized diet change does make an impact.

New state regulations as of 2019/2020 if someone wants to practice as a SLP they will need to be in the process or have already obtained their PhD. Alot of fellow students/friends have dropped out SLP programs and are looking into other fields of study also. I live in NY by the way

I have done work within the SLP field and it's not as glorious as people might perceive it 2 be. And with the new regulations I would have 2 obtain my PhD to practice, which is something that I don't want to do .

Is nursing school possible with RA.
Hello All Maybe some can shed some like or advise on my current situation. I currently have two degrees (Sociology and SLP) and have been working in the education field for the past 7/8 yrs. It has drained me to the core and I have been looking into the medical field for quite some time. I have completed all pre-reqs for any nursing program but have been taken back from applying due to my RA diagnosis. I have many many flare ups and the pain sometimes become unbearable and the many symptoms related to it seem not to get any better. The med cocktails that i have tried did not help much and if they did i was experiencing side effects, one being mild hand tremors that come and go as they please. I fear that with this I will not be able to preform my duties as a nurse to the best of my ability or even worse, put someones life in danger. Is being a nurse with this illness achievable?

Swedish Institute???
All remedial courses and A&P 1 and 2. Chem and micro I was told was not needed neither was the pre entrance exam

Swedish Institute???
Bcc this semester was holding interviews fir the LPN program. You weren't required to take the pre entrance exam and they gave exception to certain classes and grades. (A friend of mine goes there and had an interview and got in) Something to look into maybe if you are considering LPN.

Swedish Institute???
I've had the opportunity to speak to some CUNY schools (lehman, hostos cc, bcc, Hunter, and bmcc) I also went to an NYU open house and visited LIU Brooklyn campus. CUNY schools are so competitive to get in but if u have a high GPA and pre-reqs are in good standing you have a high chance of getting in, but you have to be accepted into the school first before you can apply.

Swedish Institute???
To transfer credits I was told it's $50 per credit you want to have transferred in and it had to be equivalent to their class requirements, which in sorry they can pick and choose what they want to take. But now they are giving new students an IPAD as an incentive. I also heard the some school will not honor their nursing credits, they won't transfer to a BSN program especially within CUNY schools. (Not sure if that info helps)

Swedish Institute???
I recently went to an open house for the school (my 2nd time). The first time i went their accreditation was in limbo and they had all these "rules" and fees about transfer credits. My most recent visit actually had a calmer more professional tone to it. Their accreditation since has been approved and the curriculum does not look bad at all compared to other schools. But the tuition is a tad steep for a ADN.

Mother of 2 confused about Nursing school
hi RunBabyRun, its not one school I'm focused on. Theres about 5 schools that offer a A2D within distance of me. Since i don't drive it cuts down my options, and i have to be close to my children since one has special needs. No one is guaranteed entrance to any of these programs but upon speaking with many admission counselors....having the amount of credits i already have and having done all my nursing pre-reqs it would be the better/smarter choice to go into an accelerated program which is 15 months to gain your BSN. Tuition price is not an issue at this point nor is salary with any profession i would pick.

Mother of 2 confused about Nursing school
Thank You AngPartridge3so much for your sharing your story. Congratulations on your LVN acceptance I wish you many blessings on your journey. One of my main worries is childcare too. My son also receives speech and physical therapy so i completely understand your situation.

Mother of 2 confused about Nursing school
The reason i am a sociology major is because i am going to a 4 yr school which is public which has a waiting until the yr 2017. Y not get a degree to be able to go to a A2D that has no waiting list. I pay tuition out of pocket anyway. The advise i was looking into is from other single/non married mothers who have been through or are going through the same situation and how they have made it through. What were/are their weakest and highest points dealing with nursing school and motherhood and work.
