Montgomery College, how long?

Published

I sent in my application for the fall at Montgomery College today. The deadline is March 1st. Does anyone know about how long I can expect to wait before I get an answer?

Thx,

Nikki

Well I've got my microbiology final tonight. I haven't been stressing too much about it because I have a very high A in the class and only need like a 40% to keep it. Other than that I am starting to occupy my time planning my son's bday party in July.

I was informed of an unpaid summer internship at NIH. I thought it would be interesting but then I found out it was AIDS immunology and wasn't sure I felt comfortable handling HIV infected blood. Besides, I'm not a microbiolgy or biochemical major so the fit wasn't there. I think I'm just going to keep my summer open and take the CPR and First Aid training/certification (if I get in). I am currently #7 on the medical terminology class waitlist (down from 18) but like I said before, I might just get a book to reference when I need it.

How are you passing the time?

Good luck on you final although you won't need it :) Party planning is a lot of fun. My godson's first b-day party is in June. I understand, I too would be apprehensive about handling HIV/AIDS infected blood. It sounds like a good position for someone going into biotech. I'm still debating on the summer class. I'll have to keep myself busy with work and family matters until further notice.

I hope they're actually telling the truth this time about when the letters will be going out. I'd almost rather not know when it's coming, so I'm not thinking about it everyday when I check the mail. I had just resigned myself to the fact that it wouldn't be coming until the end of May/early June. What a mind game.

It has been a mind game. A little less stress would be nice change.

Nikki-that internship at NIH sounds really interesting. I personally wouldn't have any problem handling blood from an HIV+ person. No matter what, you would be using universal precautions (ie, gloves, mask, etc), so I don't see how it could be unsafe. Besides, we all may be handling the blood of an HIV+ person at some point in our careers. When I worked as an EMT and I was helping someone who was bleeding, I had no way of knowing their HIV status, but I took the same precautions with all my patients, so it wouldn't have made a difference either way. How did you hear about the internship?

Marissa

Marissa - My professor told my class about the internship. Do you want the info? I know as nurses we run the risk of being in contact with infected blood and I know precautions are taken. My other issue is that it isn't in an area that would really help me considering what I want to do (L&D, OB, NICU, PICU). Research and microbiology is interesting to me but this just doesn't captivate me. Plus it is unpaid and far from me and I would have to get childcare. Just don't think it is up my alley. I would be doing it just to get a foot in at NIH and make contacts. And I thought it would be selfish for me to take it since it isn't my major.

Well I am next on the waitlist for the medical terminology class. Still debating it. Not sure if it is worth the money if I can just get myself a book and do it on my own. But then again, would I actually do it on my own?

I don't know why but I don't always get notified of updates to this thread. I just come in every once in awhile to check.

Hi Nikki,

I, unfortunately, can't afford to do an unpaid internship right now, but thanks for offering to send me the info. About the medical terminology class, I would recommend doing it on your own, esp. if money is an issue. You can teach yourself what you need to know and you'll learn it as we go along in school anyway. If you want, we can even practice using the terminology on this forum. What do you think?

Here's a good one: hemoptysis=spitting or coughing up blood from lungs. See, we're learning already! I'd never heard that term before.

That is a good one! Lol! Yeah, with the cost of full time nursing school and being that terminology isn't required I thought just getting the book would be a better option. I just don't know if I have the diligence to do it on my own. But I do agree that once we get rolling I will pick it up. It is only a 2 credit course so it won't be as bad as taking a 4 credit, financially. But I think I just want a break from school. The sciences have been tough and knowing how rigid nursing school is going to be I think I just want to kick back. Ya know? So I likely will pass on it...unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Nikki-Sounds like a good plan. How did your Micro. final go?

I got a 90 on my final. I didn't study as much but did better than I expected. I got an A in the class.

Yesterday I got the email that a spot opened for the medical terminology class. I decided to pass on it. I currently have a bid on ebay for the textbook.

So if the letters were supposed to be mailed out yesterday that means today could be the day???? I have been sleeping like crap for at least a week. Not sure if it is related to the anxiety or not. I think last night I dreamt that I was missing a prerequisite or something was overlooked that didn't qualify me.
