Montgomery College, how long?

Published

I sent in my application for the fall at Montgomery College today. The deadline is March 1st. Does anyone know about how long I can expect to wait before I get an answer?

Thx,

Nikki

That's what the admissions office said (two people) but if you speak with the nursing department, they say the end of the month (two people). I would think the nursing dept. knows best but from what I understand, the nursing dept. isn't the one mailing the letters, the admissions office is.

Hi,

No letter here. I read the acceptance letters are certified. If so, I guess even no letter in the mailbox is a good thing. I spoke with admissions and was told letters would go out Monday. I would think they'd know best when the letters would be going out.

Ya, but when I spoke with admissions they just said this week. Didn't give me a specific day. I only read that thing about the acceptance letters being certified in one location on these boards. So I don't if that is really true. Besides, wouldn't that cost them a fortune?

I was curious as to where other MC's program applicants are...there are only a few posts I can find for fall 2011 hopefuls. My former micro classmate is taking her Teas next wk. She's stressing out b/c she keeps getting a reading score of 80% on the practice tests.

It would be a fortune. I did read on an older MC post (I think for spring 2011) that they got certified letters.

I have a friend from A&P in the same situation. She is freaking out cause she can't pass the reading section in practice tests.

I too was looking for other threads for MC and only found one. Maybe people just don't know about this site????

On another note, I am really beginning to worry that with only an ADN I won't be able to get a job since rumor has it hospitals prefer BSNs. So maybe my backup plan will be to apply to UMD Shady Grove and take the other prereqs at MC. If I did that full time I should be ready to apply next spring. IDK. I'm stressing all around.

Also, maybe ppl are not wanting to share their grades, scores, etc.; and waiting for a decision first. I think an 83% requirement for reading is quite high. Many other CC's are requiring scores in the 60's. I know what you mean about stressing all around. UMD is a good plan too. If I don't get in, I'll apply again for spring and prob. work on other prereqs for UMD.

I agree Kristian. 83% is rather high. I think when I read my results page it stated that the average was 76%??? I don't understand how people who speak English as a second language stand a chance. Granted, the TEAS is supposed to cover grades 6-12 but that reading comprehension section is rather tricky.

Well, I just sent UMSG a couple emails asking about their program, prerequisites, etc. If I don't get in to MC I will take human growth and development online, and either statistics or chemistry. And apply to their program in the fall. I asked UMSG if I would still need to take chemistry since I've completed micro. I took a media statistics class for my BA and asked if that would count for their statistics requirement. If they accept these then I think I'd only need the development class. UMSG would be a lot closer for me than Takoma, but also cost more.

Sure it doesn't take a genius to pass the test, but for many of us it's been yrs since we were in grade school. I can't even remember the last time before the teas I needed to do math, let alone fractions w/out a calculator. The reading portion was a bit tricky. I felt the some answers were subjective. It's definitely used to weed out the "less desirable" applicants.

Sounds like you're very close to getting things done for UMD. If for whatever reason you don't get in this fall, UMD seems like a good plan. But, I wouldn't worry too much. You have a great score and meet all the other requirements. I'd be very surprised if you get bad news.

Actually I would need nutrition too. I just heard back from someone at UMD. She is encouraging me to do the BSN route and also said that because I already have a BA I could look into their Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) accelerated Master's program but it only offered at Baltimore. She told me I couldn't transfer nursing classes should I start at MC. She seemed to think they would want me to take chemistry but suggested I mail them my unofficial transcripts for evaluation to see where I stand. I should have done this ages ago. Ugh. I could probably finish up the prereqs I need to start there in the spring of next year. I'm kicking myself right now.

Don't beat yourself up. You have several options. If you get your RN first, there's still the RN-BSN option or RN-BSN/MSN if you decide that's what you want. Ideally, we want a degree that will open more doors, but there's only so much we can do in a certain time pd. And you still have the option of passing on MC's program and wait for UMD.

Right now, I'm trying to get a degree ASAP and start working. Then I'll work on the other degrees. I'm concerned about an RN not being competitive enough, but worry about is just going to add more anxiety. By the time we graduate and obtain our license, there may be plenty of jobs for newbies.

If we make ourselves indispensible as student nurse's, there's a very strong chance that a spot will be available for us when we graduate. Manager's want employees who are going to go above and beyond what's expected of them and if we do that, we'll stand out amongst the masses, even those who will hold a BSN at the end of their schooling. Think about what you have to offer that's unique only to you and build from there. What are your strengths? Focus on them and you will put yourself at the top of the list of candidates. Even if a hospital states that they only want BSN's, show them that what you have to offer surpasses what they think they can find in a BSN candidate. You just have to believe and present yourself as someone worthy of whatever position you're applying for. Okay, that's my pep talk for today.
