Montgomery College, Fall 2011, 1st semester students

Published

Here is our new thread ladies (Nikki, Andrea, Kristian, Marissa...and whoever else will be starting at MC this fall).

No it's that's fine, Andrea. I just spoke w/ UMD again. We need to ck. again about the 2nd MMR cuz they only give a 2nd MMR to international students who have no record of previous MMR shots. So, we are suppose to get a titer for MMR @ follow-up, NOT a 2nd shot.

FYI...If you have two sep. follow-up appts for MMR and Hep. B, it's ok to do them together as long it's been as least 1 month for both. I cancelled tomorrow's appt and have both on 08/04.

Andrea. We do not need a cuff. It wasn't on our supply lists from either the school or what the vendor had listed. Also, we were told by the vendor yesterday that the littmann lightweight would work perfectly find for someone without hearing problems and it runs about $30 cheaper than the classic. I don't know about engraving. Fendors didn't say anything about it yesterday. Maybe you should ask tomorrow. But their prices seemed comparable to others I've seen online. They do not offer a student "kit" though.

Kristian, I do have the contact info for Fendor. I put it in the basement and will get it later. Remind me if I forget.

Now I'm confused. I thought the papers we got at orientation said that if any titers come up negative, we have to begin the series for that vaccination. Since MMR is a 2-series vaccination, I assumed we'd have to get 2 vaccines. So we should get another titer? I'd hate to have to pay for a titer AND a vaccine if the titer comes up negative again. My doctor didn't say anything about me scheduling my follow-up for a 2nd vaccine. I think it's time to e-mail Professor Matthews again...ugh!

Thanks Nikki! I know a BP cuff isn't required but I want one anyway just to be able to practice with it at home. I remember trying to use one in one of my Biology classes a few years ago and I was horrible, so it would make me feel better to have one at home I can practice with anytime I want. Also, I don't have diagnosed hearing problems but I know my hearing is not as good as it should be. Sad, I know...since I'm only 26. I'll be the first to admit that I have a bad habit of listening to my music loud (although it's gotten better since having my son 4 years ago, but that doesn't X out the 5 or 6 years beforehand that I'd blast my music in the car or on my headphones!). I'd just feel better having a better-quality stethoscope so I know I'm hearing what I should be hearing. I actually wanted to go for the Cardio III cuz I heard that one was even more sensitive to sounds but it's also WAY more expensive and heavier so that one can wait as a possible graduation gift :)

Does Fendor's sell all the other stuff? Bandage scissors, forceps, hemostat, etc.? I think the uniform list says we can get that stuff at the MC bookstore but I can only imagine how much they'd charge after seeing what they charge for books there.

Fendors sells everything you need I believe.

we are looking at $10-$12 for shipping via Redding. It would make more sense to just get everything from Fendor. I will get their contact info and post here. We can inquire about engraving.

I really don't want to have to order 2 sets of uniforms though. I'd like to save the money. I'd have time to wash it during the day before going back. Think that is a bad idea? It probably is but I'm almost willing to try. That's probably $50 right there.

Had to detour to vacuum and mop cuz I got tired of looking at dust bunnies...

I'm now more confused about the MMR series...who wants to volunteer to email? lol!

I want a BP cuff, too for in home use and practice.

Yeah, one set of top and bottom will be around $50. They are selling the classic for $79 and the lightweight for $49, the forceps and scissors are about $5 each and the penlight is around $6.

I was saying Fendor but it is actually Fenton. Sorry. Here is their contact info...

Nikki, if you don't think it'll be too much of a hassle to wash/dry your uniform the night before, then def. save the $$.

I'm definitely only going to get 1 uniform if I have 1-day clinical. But since you guys have clinical two days in a row, I'd go for 2 sets so you won't have to be rushing around or stressing to get your 1 set washed in time. I'll probably wait on ordering anything until after tomorrow so I can see exactly how much things cost, etc. I put together a copy of my paperwork packet, including my 4 possible schedules. I'll be bringing a book, my IPod, and my phone for games. Leaving here promptly at 7:15am, which means I need to get to bed early tonight! I'm going to take my son to the pool now...hopefully that means he'll go to bed early tonight (he usually gets really tired after swimming all day and eating a heavy dinner and since we're grilling tonight that should be heavy enough! Lol)

From the prices you mentioned Kristian, I think going with the kit would probably be a little cheaper. I'll email Professor Matthews right now and hopefully by the time we get back from the pool, she'll have given me an answer.
