U.S.A. New York

Greetings, I just finish applying to Montefiore School Nursing for the Spring 2019. Is there any one else also looking to attend in 2019? I'd love to hear from you.

If you have all your pre-reqs completed, do you still go to class every day?

I have no idea. I assume you would go to class whenever it is scheduled.

What days were the nursing classes?

@Brooklyn_nursing26 ok I just read the catalog and they advice to take the pre reqs. I saw online they approve the classes from wcc. So I’ll look into that. You have been so helpful. What time are the evening classes. And is lab every Saturday?

Last semester it was Tue-Thur evenings, 6-9:30/10pm. Saturdays are clinicals from 6:45am - 4pm and yes, every Saturday.

Damn. That’s a long *** ******* Saturday. What the hell. Ugh. Lol. Ok thanks so much. I will contact you in the future if I ever need more help. Until then I wish you all the best in this program. ?

Yup, sure is. Some of us have a commute of 2 hrs or more and are waking up at 3:30-4am just to get there on time but you do what you have to do, right? lol

Just my last two cents (not that you asked me lol), but take it all one step at a time and don't think about time or how long it's going to take. I know these are over-used cliches but it really is true. No one cares how fast you finish and neither should you. You want to put yourself in the best position to succeed. I started this entire journey 3 years ago and everyone kept telling me how competitive nursing is so I wanted to make sure I did very well in all my classes so I mostly did one class at a time. Many people told me it'll take me forever but I didn't care. When it came time to apply to Monte, I had all my classes done and a 3.95 gpa. Over 200 students applied to our program and 40 were chosen. It helped relieve my nervousness because deep down I know I gave it my all, put myself in favorable position, and from there just let the chips fall where they may. If Monte didn't take me, I was going to make sure someone did lol I was also accepted into Cochran.

I don't mean to impose my opinion on you but in this short journey I've noticed many students falling into a trap of focusing on time and how fast they'll finish. I have former classmates from prerequisite classes still trying to find nursing programs that will take them. Some of them took 3-4 classes at a time, didn't do too well, and now can't find a nursing program that will take them and they're in despair. I feel for them because they spent a lot of time and money and now are not sure what to do. Anyhow, this is your journey and no one else's so you do what you have to do and good luck! Thanks for the well wishes! ?

Hi

You can share as my cents as you like lol. I actually appreciate it and will definitely take the advice. I probably would have done 3 classes as well, just to get through it. Now I’m just gonna take my time since I’m also due to give birth and I know that just having a baby and a toddler and classes is too much I’m trying for some online classes bc I don’t really want to be on campus that much. Honestly it sounds tough but everything in life is . When I wanted to go to school for pharmacy technician, ppl told me is competitive, everyone wants to be a tech and it will be hard to get a job. I got a job right out of school. Ppl are so discouraging, it’s sad. I will definitely take your advice to heart. I was thinking Lehman but wcc offers more online classes but I have to do that certificate of residency which is annoying lol. Question since you took your prerequisites did you still have to attend school the recommended hours? I see on their curriculum they have N1 and some prereqs so without the prereqs you should be in class less or it’s still the same ?

Yes, they definitely are discouraging. Many people tried to talk me out of pursuing nursing. In one ear, out the other, and kept it moving. :-)

Monte only teaches nursing classes. They don’t teach the other requisites (i.e Micro, A&P, etc). Monte has some kind of partnership deal with WCC for students to take non-nursing requisites at WCC. In short, you only have to be at Monte for the nursing classes and be at WCC whenever their classes are scheduled.

That makes sense. Ok thank you for all the info. Are you done with nursing or are you in your second year?

Thank you for all your info! I am currently purchasing books. Do you have the clinical nursing skills for sale? Also, are there some books you did not use at all that your purchased in the beginning?

My pleasure! I just finished N1 and am starting N2 this fall.

N1/N2 is year 1 and N3/N4 is year 2.

My pleasure! I'm not selling my clinical book just yet because one of my friends may need it but am not sure. To be frank, I was too cheap to spend all that money on the bundle of books lol I think it's $400-$500 or something like that. I only bought three books for lecture (and 1 for lab) and that's all I needed. The lecture book I bought brand new because you need the access code which I found helpful to do practice problems. You don't need an access code for the Pharmacology book so I bought that one used. Here are the books I used:

LECTURE:

1) Fundamentals of Nursing: The Art and Science of Person-Centered Care 9th Edition (new)

2) RNotes: Nurse's Clinical Pocket Guide 5th Edition (new)

3) Pharmacology and the Nursing Process 8th Edition (used)

LAB:

1) Skill Checklists for Taylor's Clinical Nursing Skills (I bought the 4th edition used because it was a lot cheaper even though our class used 5th edition. The books are essentially the same minus a small difference here and there).
