I've always heard lots of good things from friends and relatives about Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, but I know no nurses or other hospital staff who work there.
What's the environment like? Are nurses there treated well?
Does 1199 or ANA or some other union represent the nurses there?
Are there specialized training programs for new grads, aside from every hospital's typical orientation? For example, some hospitals (like NYP) offer direct ICU training for new grads interested in that specialization.
Look up interview process on line to get an idea of question to be asked and also be aware of questions they can not ask about like family children and your age or your childrens age. Google questions about interview process what can be asked and what can not be asked. There is a nurse manager at montie that violates the rules all the time asks about children and their ages.
If you have kids she does not hire you. I know this cause she told me does this all the time to weed out mother who might calll in to care for her kids.
Jazzy, I'm sorry that you've had that experience with some of the nursing staff. But that does not apply to all of us. I work hard everyday I work to the point where I do not take my breaks during my 12 hr shift let alone sit sometimes..Not all of us are the same. Monte is a good hospital to work in and if you start in med-surg, your set to work in any other job as hard as it might be during the time you are there.
Anyone have up-to-date information on Montefiore? I've heard great and not-so great things about this hospital. I know there are 3 separate branches. What has everyone's experience been there?! According to the latest report on NY Hospitals, Montefiore ranked #13, which isn't bad- however, I would like to please hear about RN experiences (i.e., management, nurse-pt ratios, clinical ladder, etc.,).

Monti has some good said abt it but a lot not so good. It all depends on what you are looking for in your experience. If your goals are to get a decent pay check and cash in on benifits and have the protection of a union- then monti will suit your needs.
If you desire to be a good if not great nurse, you are not going to find that at monti.the nurseing staff is grossly mismanaged.people at monti do what they feel like doing. The focus is not on superior nursing and quality nursing care.the nursing staff gets through without breaking a sweat and look forward to cashing in on great benifits. I use the word nursing in a general way which inclides the ancelary staff. Thy too have a union and feel so protected that they have no concerns if they answer a phone or how they answer a call. I called today to a department and a clerical person answered the call with her voice message ...this is wanda you have reached....department, leave your message and i will return your call at my convience.is it not strance that she will return the call at her convience rather then as soon a possible. Nursing management demonstrates no concern- she is truthful she call at her convience so if not calling back works for hre she does not call back and could care less.
That is one example of poor patient services. Poor patient services is an epidemic at this hospital.patients are discharged have recieved poor infrior dietary service. Nurses are not even checking to see if their patients have eaten a meal in the day. Days go by befor any one notices that the patient has not eaten or is consuming takeout or delivery food.many patient are on specially perscribed diets, which the nursing staff does not find important to monitor. If you are looking for a ck and good benifits go to monti. If you want to be the best nurse you can be get some good experience elsewere, even another state.if your are a new grad start with med surg experience add more on in other areas of interest as time goes by.nursing is like a building you need to know from the ground up.if you go from graduate to specilality you will be handicaped
a friend , new grad ba degree applied at monti last month was declined because he had no experience. How does that make sence ne grads get experience by getting hired.
I was a patient there a few times and the experience sucked.i would not trust the nursig staff to ck my temp- they are too distracted with their personal business and what to order for their breakfast or lunch. Patient care is the last thought on their minds
