I will be relocating to the Mobile area in a few months and would like to know if anyone knows of hospitals in this area. I am looking for an ICU position, preferably a CVICU position.:)

There are quite a few hospitals in Mobile. The three that I can think of off the top of my head are Mobile Infirmary, Providence Hospital and University of South Alabama Medical Center. They offer great benefits. I am thinking about crossing the Alabama-Mississippi state line to work over there. There are hardly any good jobs in Mississippi

it really depends on how busy you want to be and how critical you want your pts to be. If you want easy going I'd suggest knollwood, providence, or springhill. If you want to be with the most critical go to USA medical center. I went to school in mobile and wish I had never left. You'll love the city.

This is kind of off the topic but I'm curious to know a little about the city. Any idea how large it is? Did you ever work at USA? or do clinicals there? Positives and negatives about it?

Also, my husband is applying to USA's accelerated BSN program. Are you familiar with it?

i work at mobile infirmary in their medical icu[there is a surgiacl icu, neuro icu, pacu, and ccu as well]. i can says that mobile infirmary is one of the best hospitals in the area. also theirs salaries are the highest. i believe they are also the largest. would not reccommend providence or springhill, their pay sucks and you hear horror stories about new grads who don't get orientated, just thrown out there. usa is best for trauma though. they get all the class4 traumas. their pay is almost as much as mobile infirmaries. when i graduated in may last year the base rate for springhill was 15 $ an hour, providence was 16$ an hour, usa was 18$ an hour and mobile infirmary was 19$ an hour[plus 3 $ shift diff for night shift]. or 19.50 if you are bsn.

anyways, good luck!

I love Mobile, and the surrounding area. Mobile is a medium size city, with maybe 500,000 people? I think it's beautiful, it's over 300 years old. I miss those overgrown oak lined streets and historic homes. I'm from Hunstville, and I went to school at USA for a few years. Mobile is my favorite part of Alabama, I miss it.

thanks so much for the info, guys. One more question about Mobile Infirmary. Do you find that you are getting good experience there? Is the staff helpful?

i have been there in the micu for almost 1 year, and on the whole i like it. i a definantly feel i am getting good experiance- we see a wide variety of pts, everything from psych to vents. its a 14 bed unit and the staff is pretty close nit, especially on night shift. i have been pulled to the floor and find that the staff is not as close elsewhere. we admit as a team, and if one of your pt's goes bad, someone will almost always step in and help out. on the floor it seemed like every nurse for themselves. pt to nurse ratio is pretty good, usually 2 pts, but if there are call-ins can have 3. there are some gripes, but mostly a good hospital to work with. if you are coming to mobile would recommend mobile infirmary and also usa medical center. i have heard its okay to work at too.

hope some of this is helpful.
