Today I was sitting in the pool had my Psychology book by my side (on the side of the pool deck with a towel over it to protect it). My younger sibling was swimming and he wasn't splashing me or anything - mind you he knows how expensive books are and not to splash while in the pool. We're out there for an hour or so and then this mother and her daughter come. The mother (who I've seen there before while I was reading my book) tells her daughter repeatedly NOT TO SPLASH. Well don't you know the little girl LITERALLY jumps in RIGHT NEXT to me and drenches the current pages I'm reading (even with the towel on it) and what really happens is it leaks to four pages. I didn't even know what to say. I was so mad I just literally got up and left. Idk how people's kids can be so inconsiderate of others property and not even apologize when they do such a thing. You know I may not have paid more than 31 dollars for the book (but if I bought it brand new I would have paid at least 140!- and it's not like she knows that though)! And who's to say I don't want to try and SELL the book so I can get back at least some of what I paid for it.... I mean seriously, where is the respect now-a-days?!

Ah don't sweat it.. sell it through half dot com if the school won't take it back.. but only a few pages. No real harm done.
Hey thanks for that, I will do that. I mean I just really respect everything I am given and sometimes I think kids now-a-days really don't show respect (because of how their parents are raising them... which is really sad) :/

I understand your frustration, however bringing expensive textbooks to the poolside where kids are going to run, jump, splash and let loose is not a good idea. Hopefully you are able to re-coop some of your money. Blowdryer might Help!

I would have to agree. I'm sure it wasn't this child's intention to splash you or to potentially ruin an expensive book. She simply saw the pool and was ready to have fun. It's really not fair for you to have expected her to behave any differently.
Well her mother told "not to splash" but the worst part about it is that I had my book COVERED WITH A TOWEL (as i stated in my original post) while I was reading it and she jumped in right next to me (when there's a WHOLE pool to jump in....) she laughed after she did it too.... ugh
The fact that she laughed is what irks me

I see where you are coming from, but that's how kids are. Funny enough, your psychology book will probably explain that. It's the normal psychological development of a child to not really understand these things. I mean I'm not sure how old you are talking, but it's normal for young kids to be "egocentric." It's not the mother's fault and it's not even really the kid's fault. I agree with a previous poster that it's probably not going to be a big deal when it comes time to sell back the book.

At the risk of being attacked, it IS a swimming pool and your book was on the edge of the pool. I don't think it's an issue of respect, but more of an issue of finding a more appropriate place to study. I am not saying this in a mean way! I promise. How old was the little girl? I'm asking because I wouldn't consider this unruly behavior at a swimming pool by a child---especially under the age of about 8-10 (I think prior to about that age, children don't really understand the respect to objects thing that well). Even after age 10, I don't consider it unruly---just that if she was being disobedient, then that is a different story.
I just know that I had an attitude similar to yours about 'unruly' kids before I became a Mother. Quickest route to humility--for sure!

As a mom and grandmother I have to say: "WTH are you mad about?!? It IS a pool, after all."
Seriously, if you don't your books to get wet why on earth would you take them to a public pool where kids go to have fun?

As a mother, a student, and a person who uses common sense, I would never bring my expensive text books to a place such as the pool. It's a pool. Expect your belongings to get wet. :icon_roll

Having been a child and now a mom, I would have to say that it's fun not listening to your parents and swimming is exciting. I know to this day, every time I see a pool, all I can think is "Cannonball!" I am sure the little girl didn't mean to wet your book, and I understand that you did pay a lot for that book. But I am sure the water won't damage it.
