Hi,

I graduated from nursing school summer 2007 with a BSN. Worked for just under 6 months in ER (did not finish my internship) before I came to the decision that ER wasn't a great fit and my husband was deploying for 2 months and I couldn't work 12 hour shifts with kids. I left that job in April. We have since moved to California and my husband is gone a great deal of the time and will be deploying for at least 6 months. I have two kids and don't know anyone here so really need a job that will fit into normal daycare hours with no or just the occasional weekend day. I am living in Ventura County and could really use some advice on where to look for a job. I thought a clinic job would be good, but don't know where to find them. Any help/advice would be great.

What about the base/post employment office? They frequently have off-base jobs listed or employers who are military-friendly.

On base, they gave me a lot of info that didn't pertain and mostly just hospital numbers, all the hospitals I contacted told me that with my experience, they only have 12 hour shifts.

No advice, just wanted to wish you luck....

Psych still often has 8 hour shifts in many areas.

To fnd office jobs a lot are posted in newspapers, some are by word of mouth. Our old pediatrician actually just posted job openings in their office.

Good luck to you.

Ask other military wives. If you will be needing child care, call potential child care facilities and ask if they know of any nurses who could guide you? Ask at church. Look thru the yellow pages, put some resumes out asking for 8 hour shifts, you may find a hospital will hire you for an 8 hour in pysch, or rehab. 12 hour is the preferred, but there are hospitals and nursing homes that do 8 hour as well.

Let us know how it works out. How old are your children?

Doctors offices and clinics maybe your best bet at this point. You might what to see what the requirments for school nursing are and see if you can do that prn. You can call your local school board for that. Also, you have your BSN, could you work at the base hospital or clinic?

Check to see if you can do pool or per deim at local hospitals, sometimes they can be accomadating with schedules. Home care is also an option, that's usually 8hr shifts and if your children are in daycare or school you could work around their schedule.

My kids were little when I went back to school for nursing. It can be done, it just takes a little work.

Anyway, good luck and let me know how you make out. My prayers will be with you and your family. (I'm ex military myself).

Tried the school nurse route, that is where I was supposed to start in August before we got suddenly transfered. There are only Health Techs in the schools here with 2 supervising RN's districtwide. I haven't really done anything but replied to some jobs on the internet and a public health nurse position. I just need to improve my attitude and keep talking to people and something will come up. Thanks for the advice.

Hi, I am also a fellow military wife and contemplating what I'm going to do. Right now I am pregnant, but would like to go back to working maybe 6 months after I have my baby, but my husband will be deployed.

I am an LVN and the best solution I can come up with is to try and find a job on post/base at one of the clinics. You could try looking on the CPOL website. Just do a google search for it. This type of job seems to be the only one I can find that will accomodate daycare hours and no weekends. You could always try and find a home daycare provider that would do extended hours, I'm not sure how weekends would work though.

It's really frustrating for me, because I am going to be completely alone here with no family to help me. I'm not even sure if its going to be worth working!:( I hope you can find something...I understand how you feel.

Hi,

I am Military and work with plenty of GS and contract civilians who are Military spouses. Have you looked at the jobs.gov site? Have you contacted the local military healthcare facility, (hospital or clinic?)

I've worked in two clinics in my past and those where both day shift jobs, Mon - Frid with weekends and Holidays off. Maybe that would be a fit for you.

Best,

Gen

All I can say is, get this thread over to the Military nursing forum. You will be "bombarded" with good advice and answers.
