My husband is in the air force and we found out we will be locating to Spangdahlem next year. I am a nurse and would like to know how job prospects are in Germany for spouses either in German hospitals or the clinic on base. I know we are within 1.5 hours from Ramstein and Landstuhl and we thought maybe it might be a possibility to live half way between Spangdahlem and Ramstein or Landstuhl. Anyway, any information would be appreciated!

I too was a military wife in Germany several years ago. Unless you know German and are licensed in Germany you cannot work in a German hospital. Most good sized military installations have a medical clinic at the very least. Some have a small ER, some are strictly primary care clinics. Working in a military hospital is always a good choice if you can work out the living arrangements. Keep in mind that gas is very expensive in Europe and that sometimes has a bearing on the desicion to commute a long distance. Also, if there are spouses that are prior military that are competing for the same job as you they get first priority becasue of their prior service. I found this to be the biggest obstacle when I was searching for a nursing job. But, if you can get hired and get into that system you are able to get a job much easier when your family goes to a new duty station. Hope this helps and good luck!!!

Jobs for spouses in Germany are tough to come by. I'm in Stuttgart and I lucked out by getting a job within three months of arriving, but I'm with the New Parent Support Program. I briefly attempted to secure employment at our very small clinic, but there were no openings. Spangdahlem is pretty small and obscure, so you may run into same issue I did. I have no idea what it would entail to work off post, but know that spouse employment in Germany is not easy. Not impossible, but definitely not easy. What is your nursing background?

I am a German nurse.

Try to get a job on base as nurse, bc the work condition and payment is much better than in our local hospitals.

However if you want to work in a German hospital, it is a good time right now( nursing shortage) but be prepared, that the salary is low and the work density is much higher than in the US. Also most employees are expect that you work overtime of course unpaid, bc you do it for the patients.

You need to speak German fluently to work at a German hospital and you need to take a test for it.

If you have a BSN it is pretty easy to get your German license. ADN and Diploma can be a little bit tough, but I think you still will get it.

Be prepared that the system is different, most hospitals don't works with aides and on floors you mostly with two or three nurses for 20-30 patients. On ICU, you mostly have 2-5 patients.

I worked as an RN at LRMC when my husband was stationed at Ramstein a few years ago. I called the unit I had experience in directly and the manager interviewed and hired me, but the hiring process took several months. I happened to luck out since they had an open position they were looking to fill. Another option would be to volunteer with the Red Cross a lot of the volunteer positions lead to paid positions over time, once they have a vacancy to fill. Good luck to you. We LOVED Germany and would go back in a second.

I am here in Germany now and was recommended to seek this position.. but I have no idea if they would even consider me. Thanks in Advance
