Hi all,
I realize that this is all a huge what-if scenario, but I am considering joining the Navy or Air Force as a qualified applicant. I will have just over a year experience in med-surg nursing. What are the chances I could get an overseas tour in Europe (not Asia) for my first duty station?
I was a mil spouse for 12 years, so am somewhat familiar. Married, no kids.

Very, very, very unlikely.
Those slots are highly competitive and extremely sought-after. It isn't impossible, but it is so unlikely, I would tell you not to count on it until you reach the rank of captain (lieutenant in the Navy) or higher. Sometimes everything falls into place just perfectly and you'll find yourself exactly where you wanted to be, but especially when it comes to the desirable duty station spots (Europe, Hawaii, etc.), that's not usually the case.

Germany was going to be my first assignment (Army) but that was some years ago. Now? Low.

If you consider Alaska an overseas tour (the military does), then it's very possible you would get that for a first assignment.

It is possible but not as easy as enlisted getting a overseas duty station as first assignment. A FORSCOM unit will be out of the question, they are no longer placing very junior nurse's in these positions.
