Microbiology/Human Disease Hillsborough Community College Summer 2008

Published

hey everyone! i am working towards completing some prerequisites before i can apply for hillsborough community college's nursing (evening program). i am hoping to take microbiology/human disease this summer (2008) at the brandon campus and was just wondering if anyone else had plans of doing this too? hope to hear from someone!

I took Micro online at USF a year ago with Dr. Morris. It was easy. I got a B craming for every exam. Your grade is based on 5 exams. He posts powerpoints and video lectures. If you have an A before the final you don't have to take it. His syllabus will tell you exactly what each test will cover. He even posts reviews for each exam online and I really recommend doing them because I didn't realize how easy the calss would have been had I done the reviews from the start. The lab works the same way except the exams will consist of diagrams or histology slides and it's multiple choice. It's basic recognition and memorization. Dr. Morris is a good professor VERY understanding and helpful. I had him for A&P 1 and 2 as well. Hope this info helps.

Hi Coquito85,

Thanks for the great advice. I will definitely do the reviews.

What do you guys mean by "cut off" GPA's. Is that the lowest GPA's to be granted admission, or the lowest GPA's to be considered for admission? It looks like I will be entering with around a 3.648 pre-req GPA, but the admissions people gave me the idea that a 3.8 would be more realistic... I hope that isn't true.

Also, I'm kinda ****** bc I have a bachelors in science from USF as well as an EMT certification that I don't think will even be considered in my application. Seems like a pretty stupid process?

Hi DXJoe~

Let me clarify, the "cut off" was the lowest GPA's that were granted admission. My GPA was very close to yours at a 3.667 and I got in my first try. You should have noooo problem getting in. Hope that helps.

Unfortunately, your current Bachelors and EMT certification has no impact on your acceptance....strictly GPA at HCC. I know it can be a pain. Good luck.

I was told the average HCC applicant was 3.8... Were the advisors lying? That's messed up if they were blowing off my GPA when the average was well below.

I spoke to the Nursing Program Director at Dale Mabry and she never told me that the average was 3.8. I just spoke with her in March or April this year I'd say, so it wasn't all too long ago. I was told by her that it varies. So we have no idea what the average will be during the semester we apply. As we can see, the average changes all the time. By no means does it seem if you have any less than a 4.0 or 3.8 will you not get in the program. But if there are enough applicants that apply during the semester you do, with 3.8 or 4.0 then that will be the so called "cut off". They just list everyone's GPA that applies and take the top how many ever they have spots for. The only thing we can all do as applicants is do the best we can. The higher our GPA, the higher our name will be on that list to get in. Good Luck!!

I spoke with Mrs. Sandrowitz today, she told me the average cut off ranges from 3.1-3.3. A few years ago it was 3.6. I'm not sure why they handed me that crap in the plant city advising office... Does anyone know if Hillsborough county residents get preference, or if it still goes back to 21 credit GPA? I know SPC give preference to Pinellas county residents. I'm looking forward to getting this over with. What a messy process for some of us. Good luck everyone, thanks for your input!

When I spoke with the director, she didnt say anything to me about Hillsborough County residents getting preference. I understand it's solely prereq GPA.

:yeahthat: Exactly what Noellelyn said! No preference for ANY thing, just solely pre-req GPA. DXJoe, with a 3.648 I would say you are pretty much in unless it is a fluke of super high GPA's when you apply.

Maybe I should forget the RN program and go into consulting...? I'm pretty sure I could put together a convincing presentation about why admissions decisions should be based on more than 21 lower level credits. I'm sure there are a few applicants out there with life/accademic experiences that are more valuable than an "A" in ENC 1101....

I guess I should be excited? Thanks for all your help everyone. Looking forward to the Jan 15 cycle ;)

It's just the way HCC has decided to choose their applicants. There are many many schools out there that DO consider other things such as work experience, volunteering, other degrees, etc. but it's just how one school decides to choose applicants. It makes it a pretty easy to understand what you are judged on though. It's cut and dry so I guess that positive way to look at it. Good luck!

I am an alternate for HCC Dale Mabry campus. I am not yet in the program. This is my third time as an alternate, so; I don't want to be too optimistic. I found out that starting last week the school was going to be notifying alternates if they have a spring 2009 seat. I am wondering if anyone has heard that they are in yet. I am very nervous, and I would appreciate any information. Thank you
