hey everyone! i am working towards completing some prerequisites before i can apply for hillsborough community college's nursing (evening program). i am hoping to take microbiology/human disease this summer (2008) at the brandon campus and was just wondering if anyone else had plans of doing this too? hope to hear from someone!
myfutureisbright~
that's good to know about the study guide for brannon. I did get it from the bookstore and have already been looking it over. I was wondering if there'd be a lot of the information in the study guide on the test, or just a portion of it. I was hoping it'd be almost exactly like the exam because there's just SO much information for the microbio that it would seem so overwhemling to study ALL of the material, rather than just being able to focus on the studyguide. (which i'm sure is why the prof did that-made the studyguide and had the test mimic it) I hate when prof give you studyguides but then the test isn't based on it at all you know! it's so frustrating when that happens, almost as if their whole reason in it is to throw students off! so that's good news to know I can actually study the study guide and it'll prepare me for the tests!! --what a concept!!
Everything thats in the studyguide is on the test. You do not have to worry about pop up questions that is not in that study guide. He even breaks it done to show you what will be on test 1, test 2, and etc... Also, i would recommend you to get a recorder so you can catch everything cause sometimes he goes fast. For what its worth, I have heard that the lab is fairly easy. Are you sure that you are taking him for the summer cause i know that he said he was not teaching that subject in the summer and that the only subject he was teaching was AP2 and AP1??? But I know for sure that he said he is teaching AP2 in the summer. Plus, I don't see his name on-line to sign up for his class. You might want to make sure that he is your teacher cause I know that when I first signed up for his Ap1 lab that they changed the teacher and we did not find out until we went to AP lecture class and he told us that we have another teacher for lab. But i know he is teaching MCB in the fall for sure. But you will be fine. Alot of people have told me that MCB is easier than AP. I know some people that are taking both AP and MCb together (I think their crazy) but they are doing fine. Just study and you will be fine.
On the studyguide it has his name on it, so I guess I just assumed that was who I'd have for the class. It was always left as "TBD" as far as I knew..well the last time I checked...so I guess I just assumed that's who it was since it was his studyguide. Maybe another prof is using his studyguide for their class..no idea. Guess I'll find out when I go to class!
As far as applying to both campuses-I'm not sure. You have to obviously select the one that you PREFER. I was told by the nursing program coordinator at eh Dale Maby campus that everyone is listed by GPA (prereq GPA) and those that have the highest GPA will be accpeted with their first choice. Then they move down to the next person on the list. They try to accomodate which campus and which program you want. So really say they accept 40 people (just for example) to the evening program at Dale Mabry--say it just so happens that out of the first 40 people that are on this list with the highest GPA all want the Dale Mabry evening program-if they accept then the spots are filled...They just work their way down the list accomodating what those people want. If all the spots fill up (back to my example of the 1st 40 people wanting dale mabry evening) if those 40 people accept that that campus and class is full..then that 41st person on the list maybe wanted dale mabry evening also, but it's full, so they are offered maybe the day class or plant city campus evening or day instead. It just all depends on what's available you know. If you do really well and get a high GPA then you will get what class and what campus you want. But if you are in the middle or not the top few, then there might be a chance that you dont get the campus or class you want, but you do get an offer at another campus or class. Does that make sense? So if you are flexible as to which program you can take and at which campus that will be to your advantage. Like me for example, I have to apply for an evening program. Because i work during the day--so even if I was offered a spot in the day program I wouldnt be able to take it. Id have to turn it down, and in that case, they'd move to the next person on the list. Hopefully that helps.
PLEASE don't write in the studyguide until you get to class. So, just incase that professor is not using that studyguide you can return it. I didn't know that other professors use his studyguide. I was told that you only get the studyguide if you are in his class but just wait until the first day to see.
Oh, THANK YOU for the clarification on the other issue and yes thats make sense to me. I don't care what campus I go to just as long as I get in. Day or evening is not a problem either. My job is very flexible with work schd so I want have a problem in that area and I have a wonderful family to helps me with me daughter so that will help out. But I wanted to let you know that I have a friend that use to work me that and she is in the nursing program @ dale marby and she also got a job @ TGH while she stills go to school for nursing. I know that they hire nursing students that have completed Fundmental of Nursing to work at TGH. Im not sure what she does there but she gets paid 40hrs but doesn't work the whole 40. So, if you were to do that maybe that can help you with work and school. Cause I pretty sure that they will work with your schd so you can study and go to class PLUS that will be really cool to work in that enviroment so you can get a hands one feel and that can help in the nursing program. I know that I might take that route if I am accepted. But you have a great day and don't stress about MCB.
i have s. treat for microbio! i was wrong about having prof. brannan-i just assumed since he authored the review manual we have for the class that he was the prof. anyways, tonight is my first night of microbio at the brandon campus! eek! i am so excited and so nervous at the same time. i graduated college in 2005, so haven't been "out of the loop" for too long, but it still makes me a little apprehensive because i haven't been "in the classroom" for a couple years. but so excited at the same time! :redpinkhe is anyone else starting some summer courses @ hcc this summer for nursing? good luck to those that are!
Hi Noellelynn,
Don't be nervous you will be fine. I am taking english 2 this summer at the ybor campus but it does not start until 07/01/08. I tried to take the summer off but it feels funny being out of school. I have nothing to do when I get home from work anymore. So I decided today to sign up for summer II so that I get a little break and not to much. But good luck in class and tell me how your first day went. Also, I talked to a dale mabry campus advisor and she told me that the cut off GPA for August 2007 nursing was 3.095. She was not able to give me this August cut off cause they didn't have the information yet. But I will let you know when I find out.
Noelellyn~
Hey there.....so you have Prof Treat. I had her last summer for Micro, so it is true that everything is crammed in there in only 10 weeks. But study and pay attention to the diagnosis scenarios at the end of each chapter. I know what you mean about being "out of the loop" though as I took an almost 10 year break from HS to college.....so it was a little rough at first but you will do fine.
Myfutureisbright~
Good luck with your English II this summer. Just to let you know the cut off GPA for
Aug 2007 was 3.095
Jan 2008 was 3.143
Aug 2008 was 3.238
Seems like us soon-to be nurses are getting smarter! Good luck. Let me know if you need any other info.
Cari
After tonight it definitely seems like it will be a lot of info. but it seems doable because the prof seems like she actually wants her students to do well. It seems like she'll be straight forward for the most part what's on the exams and that's what will actually show up on the exams. I hate when some profs lecture one thing in class and then other things show up on the exam and it's like where did this come from?! So anyways it seems like it'll go okay-but you know it's hard to tell right now as it was only the first night-just going over the syllabus and class policies/schedule, etc. But it seems like it'll all go well! :)
myfutureisbright~ what classes are you taking this fall? spring? you said you are applying for the nursing program the following summer right? by June 1 2009? for the Jan. 2010 nursing program? That's what I'm doing, just wondering if we were in the same boat!
Wow, I haven't found anyone who lives in the Tampa area until now! I got an acceptance letter to HCC in March and have accepted! I'm so excited! However, I'm a full time student at USF and have been trying to get into that program for 2 years now and I just got an acceptance letter from them too! Now I don't know where I should go, HCC or USF?I don't know about the microbiology at HCC, but at USF, it's hard work. There is a LOT of memorization of diseases, their causes, etc, etc. There is definitely some work that needs to be put in in order to do well in any microbiology class.
Good luck with your prereqs!!
Hi ngoda,
Congratulations on the acceptance.
I saw your post about taking Microbiology at USF. I am thinking about taking it at USF however I wanted to talk to someone who had taken it there to see what it was like. I have a couple of questions:
Did you take it online or in a classroom?
What professor did you have? Was it Morris?
What were the assignments/tests like? Were they online or did you have to show up at campus?
How did you do your lab assignments and tests?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also sent you a PM if you wanted to answer via PM.
Thanks,
gtlpn2rn (Gina)

Hi, I am taking MCB in the fall with Dr. Brannan as well. He is a GREAT teacher. I have taking him for AP1 & im in my last 2 class days with him for AP2. Also Dr. Millete at the ybor campus is good for AP2. I took her for the lab part of AP2 this semester and I finish her class this Wednesday and got an "A". Also, if you are taking Dr. Brannan make sure get his study guide at the campus bookstore cause that is the TEST!!!! It tells you what terms you need to know and what questions you need to know to help you study for the test. I am looking to apply in Jan. The only classes i have left are soci and mcb/wlab. I am taking soci this summer and mcb/wlab in the fall. The only class i have problem in is COLLEGE ALGEBRA and i can't wait to get out of there this week. Maybe we can study together for mcb since we will be in the same class. ******Also, does anyone know if you can apply for the evening and daytime program for nursing????*******
I just want to make sure I get in. I am so nervous that I will not get in that I really stress myself out!!!! I need to start a career for myself and my child and not just have a job!!
