Microbiology/Excelsior

Published

Hey, All!

I have started Microbiology thru Excelsior and have only read 2 chapters so far. I'm finding it kind of overwhelming. Has anyone taken EC's microbiology exam? If so, how did it go? do you remember what the general idea of the questions were? Thanks so much in advance for any info/advice you guys might have!

Thanks for the encouragment. I will definitely look into the cliffs notes.:)

Here's a Cliffsnotes link to help in your studies. I found these kinds of things to be helpful, because Cliffs Notes are great at organizing large amounts of content into a workable size.

UNREAL! I had no idea that you could get cliffs notes for free! thanks a lot, I really appreciate it! I will definitely look them over.

Trinity, I'm a homeschool Mom, also. It has take me over 2 years to get to this point. Have you taken any of the Nursing Concepts exams, yet? Break every thing down into tiny sections and just study over and over. I kept notes cards in the bathroom. ha ha ha

You can do it!

Thanks for your response. Yes, I've thoroughly examined the study guide and have purchased the entire course kit from Excelsior College... so basically, I am expected to learn everything inside and out except for the kitchen sink. I know, "boo hoo", right? I think I'm going to have to quit Excelsior again. This Microbiology is overwhelming and I just have way too much going on right now with working graveyard shift, family, kids, homeschooling them, etc. I don't have the time to learn every single stinking bacteria and blot technique known to mankind... which I will never use anyway. This really stinks. I guess I'll go on making LPN salary for RN work until my kids turn 18, right? Thanks again for your response. P.s... the cowbell skit is hilarious.

WOW! Thanks for posting this link. It's great!

No, I haven't taken any of the nursing exams yet this time around. Back in early 2000's I took 4 nursing exams and passed them as well as english comp with excelsior. But, I got married in 2003 and have had 2 children since then, so everything with excelsior was put on hold. Basically, the only thing I have going for me with excelsior right now is the english composition. The nursing exams are basically non-existant, as though I never took them:o

Trinity, check out http://www.flashcardexchange.com I have found a lot of great Micro material there. Also try http://www.studystack.com. Flashcard exchange seems to be a little more easier to maneuver around.

I used flashcardexchange to study for the GRE. It was pretty useful- forgot all about that site!

I used it for most of my Nursing Concepts Exams, also. If you search certain topics like Med/Surg Nursing there are some great flashcards that are broken down by topic to match NC exams. You can also type in NC 1, etc and pull up some good cards. I needed all the help I could get. Right now I have some great Micro and A&P sets saved.

BBFRN, what school are you attending for your PhD? I worried about finding a graduate school that will accept EC.

Trinity, I sent you a private message. I have some links to Micro flashcards that you may find helpful. I'll compile them and send them to you, soon.

I sent you a PM about my program. FWIW, there isn't one program in my area that doesn't accept their credits. If your state's BON is OK with them, then the surrounding schools will probably be as well. They are definitely not lacking in their curriculum. The only bone of contention is their lack of clinicals, but if you are already a working RN by the time you start applying to BSN programs (or higher), that assumes a working knowledge of the nursing process. You should be just fine. Not only that- you'll most likely be taking some online or distance courses in your other schools as well. You'll have an advantage, and the benefit of already having done that.

Can anyone help me out here, I am considering EC, it really looks like the best option for me. My question is this.

I am trying to piece this together, bare with me...Confused here.

We study using any resourses we choose...study guides, text books, practice test ect, pay for the test, Pass and earn credit??? Is this correct?

How about the online classes listed on the website at 920.00/3cr. a class? are those optional?

Thanks..
