Micro before A&P?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

The first semester is winding down and now it's early spring registration week. Since I am a current student, but haven't technically earned any credits yet, I get to register the very last day of early registration week:o

I had already made up my preferred class list before registration opened (that way you can register all classes at once vs searching for each one then registering). This, however, doesn't save you a spot in the class. I put A&P1 on. There is one evening A&P class that had 24 spots. I checked this morning and the class is full! I don't get to register until tuesday. Blah.

I will keep checking but if a spot doesn't open, I will have to fill the spot with another class. THere are several spots still left open in Microbiology but I'm hesitant to take it first because a friend who is a nurse said to take it after both A&P classes.

So those of you who have been through both, should I take it last or does it even really matter? Under micro, the only thing it says is it is strongly recommended student have recently taken high school chemistry and biology or completed the basic biological concepts class which I am finishing up right now.

If nothing else, I have a bunch of other classes I can take. I just wanted to get the major science ones started.

THanks for everyone's input. I am going to go ahead with Micro now. There's 11 spots left and I can register tomorrow at 8 am so you can bet I'm going to be up early and at my computer waiting :chuckle

I am going to wait for fall to register for A&P. By then I should have enough credits racked up that I can score a spot. If I take two of the minor classes this summer, then take both AP's in fall and spring paired with two 1 credit hour classes that only last a couple months, then I will be able to get on the wait list after that spring semester.

That's interesting. At my school A&P is a pre-req for micro, and I think that micro would be hard without it, but maybe the micro at your school has a different curriculum. It's different everywhere. If you can take it first, than go ahead. It's good to get as many classes out of the way as you can.

the only pre req for micro at my school is chem. I think you could do micro without AP but I wouldn't do micro without taking some other for of Biology, its a hard course and you are expected to know certain things. I definately think having taken AP1, Biology and Chem is going to help me in Micro next semester.

I think you should take whatever is available. I took Micro first, A&P second, and I am completing my Chemistry this semester. I did not take Chemistry in high school or while working on my BA, and it had been years since I had a science class when I took Micro. I must agree that the classes really don't overlap very much. You will do fine no matter what you take. Don't worry about it. I'm glad that I took my science classes the way I did, and I don't think that my Micro or A&P would have been one bit easier if I would have taken Chemistry first. Have faith in your abilities, and fix your schedule to suit your needs if you can. Good luck!!

Hi-

I took Micro before A&P and had no problem. I think you would be fine taking it first. Good luck!

So did you go ahead an take Micro this semester country girl? I'm curious because I'm thinking of doing the same thing (micro before A&P).

Let me know, and thanks!

I took micro already and am scheduled to take my A&P class this next semester. I didn't see it as a problem at all with the micro so I'd say go for it! Good luck!

You set yourself up for success....good luck, you'll be glad that you had chem ;) Next semester it will be mandatory to take chem before Micro, we had too many low or failing grades in micro.

I have no idea what I am getting into with micro but I am looking forward to it LOL. We use to have chem as a pre req to nursing but they changed that last year, now its not a pre req but it is a req for Micro so you have to take it regardless, the only difference is you don't HAVE to get an A now of course I don't have that mentality I need an A in everything heheheh.

I am currently about to finish AP202 and Micro in the same semester. I had an idea that AP202 would be easier and Micro would be a death march to finals...well, guess what? It was sort of the other way around. In many ways they complemented each other and I was stronger in each individual class because of the other class. ( if that makes any sense). I was worried because I hadnt taken Gen Biology. or any of the other pre-req's either. I am not a genius but I am willing to work hard and am getting at LEAST a B in both. (probably an A in Micro) So dont let this worry you.

Go for it!!

You will do just as well in micro as you do everything else. You seem to have it very well together. Keep that A mentality....whether you need it or not...it looks pretty darn good on that transcript ;) You never know what the future holds! You are a leader and have you not noticed that I am following you around like the plague and put my :twocents: in at about any of your posts?:lol2: Go for it, be all that you can be....more power to you :pumpiron:
