Chamberlain or Davenport?

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Hello,

I'm new here and new to the state of Michigan (sort-of...I grew up here, but have been gone for 20 years and just moved back). I was accepted to both Chamberlain College of Nursing and Davenport University, but am having a hard time deciding. With Chamberlain, I will graduate a semester earlier than with Davenport, but Davenport is significantly less expensive. I have a few questions I'm wondering what your thoughts are on. If anyone has any thoughts, they would be greatly appreciated!

Is Chamberlain worth the cost? Has anyone had experience with their finance department? Being associated with DeVry, I'm suspicious that the costs will go up significantly.

Is Davenport a good school? I've seen both good things and horrible things online, so I'm confused.

If you had to choose, which would you pick?

Hi,

I'm a current LPN student at Davenport (Warren) and alot of my class just got accepted into the BSN program. I like our school (for the most part). Being a private university, it is more expensive than most of the public universities (and for that reason, I plan on getting my LPN-RN at a community college and getting my BSN afterwards-being able to pay cash and knock out one year).

I do not know of anyone going to Chamberlain yet, since they are new to the area.

Best wishes!

Since I am averse about accumulating more student loan debt than necessary, I would advise you to select the school with the least expensive tuition and fees.

Thank you both for your thoughts!

Run away from Chamberlain! Bad reputation. They tried to rook me in with the lure of less pre-reqs and faster graduating time.

Their credits don't transfer for further study at the major universities, so if you want to continue your education, you're screwed. The staggering debt is also a red flag. They charge more than a university bachelor program just for an ADN.

Definitely go with Davenport. The hospitals in our area won't take Chamberlain students for clinicals. I've seen Davenport students when I've been on my clinical rotation at another school.

Hello! I go to the chamberlain in the troy Mi area. I started in January and I love it!! It is really pricey but I think it's well worth it! All my credits transferred over so I will be graduating in only two years. The class sizes are small so you really get to know the teachers. They offer you free tutoring, and every wednesdays are NCLEX review days, the list goes on and on. And whoever said there classes don't transfer, why would they even need to transfer? They look at your degrees not your individual classes.

You'll need those classes to transfer if you want to go on for further study, such as NP, CRNA, MSN, etc.

Chamberlain has a bad reputation in our area and most grads have their resumes placed in the HR circular file. Speaking of being a grad, many students have complained that they've been required to keep paying for extra "modules" and get their degrees withheld until the fees for unplanned modules are payed. Many end up not being able to sit for NCLEX or get their degree because of this. They end up with massive student loan debt and unable to get a job to pay for it. The school considers ANY job obtained after attending as "job placement". So, if you end up working at a fast food restaurant because you can't get hired any where else, they still consider that a "successful" job placement.

Caveat emptor!

Hi SopranoKris, Chamberlain just opened in Michigan - how is it that you have had so much interaction with their grads and the program? Is it the Illinois grads? Your information has been very helpful, and your thoughts about transferring are important to think about. I gave up my seat at Davenport due to driving distance, and postponed my admission to Chamberlain until the fall. With that much money at stake, I thought I would do more research and give it more thought before I jump in!

The campus in Troy is new for start-to-finish BSN, but they've been offering online RN-to-BSN programs for quite a while. That's how I know about them. DeVry (who owns Chamberlain) is headquartered in Illinois. They are more concerned with you signing a financial agreement than checking your background/credentials for prior education.
