Miami Dade Community College Nursing Students...

U.S.A. Florida

Hello! Are there any MDCC nursing students out there?? I'm currently wrapping up my pre-req's at MDCC and will be applying to MDCC for their Accelerated ADN program for January of 2006. Is anyone currently enrolled in that program? Was it difficult to get in? What is your schedule like..(between class hours and rotations). And can you pick which hospital to do the rotations at? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Patty

Thank you so much, you gave me so much hope! I was almost going to spend 24,000.00 at medvance for the LPN program. I have a B.A and an A.A, and due to that I only have about $13,000.00 left in financial aide. I want to use it but in a way that it will help me with what I really want.

Since a little girl I always use to dress up on Halloween day:mad: as a Nurse.

I took 2 yrs of Bio, which include Microbiology, and general bio, Anatomy and Physiolgy, and labs. Micro was the worst I recieved a C, but that Teacher was something else.

This is something I really want, and thats to be a RN and if I gone this far w/ stress of Professors, applications entrance exams and etc...I will be there.

By the way what semester are u in MDC and how are the classes? Do they give you enough hands on?

:clown:

Well I dt want to burn u out w/ questions. My plans are to at least take a Chemistry class at MDC CHM 1033 and 1033L. Do you know of any good Professors for Chem. I registered with Gottlieb and Allyssa in the Kendall area.

Thanks and keep in touch, g. Luck w/ school, u will be there soon!:icon_hug:

Hi Nathalie, I'm also starting Barry in Jan 07. I just finished music app and bio med ethics. I will be taking religion in Jan 07. Could you recommend a good teacher. Dr. Horner was great for bio med ethics.

Ltorres,

I am going into the last semester at MDC. The classes are more intense than difficult (feels like we have an exam every week), but doable. For semester 3, about 6 out of 48 people failed in each sequence (12 total). It is difficult, but practicing NCLEX questions and most of all ATTENDING LECTURES is the key to passing.

You'll get so much hand-s on learning through skills lab and clinical, that you might start counting the days until the end of your hospital rotation.

As far as CHM1033/L is concerned, I'll send you a PM (I'm not sure if it's ok to mention names on this board.)

Good luck with getting into MDC accelerated! The people who did stay in the accelerated program loved the experience (you get to borrow a free tablet PC for the year too).:wink2:

Thanks for the info....my plans are to go ahead and start the school at Medvance. In March 2007 I will start the LPN program, I will still keep trying to apply at MDC, but at least I know that Im doing something. I know LPN is a different level than a RN, but at the end I will still be a NUrse. Just that it will be easier noe to get into the Bridge Nursing program at MDC, and I could even do it online after I am a LPN, the RN should be a little be easier.

Well thanks for the info...I wish you a great Holiday! I will be in NyC for two weeks, but still will be answering in Allnurses.com

Hello yaca799,

Have you hear about the LPN program at Mercy Hospital? I've heard that MDCC has a very long waiting list aswell as BCC. Any information would help.

Thanks!

hi, i know that mercy has a lpn program, but its too far for me. im in the kendall area. as far as mdc there is no waiting list. you just have to pass the net test and get over a 70 percentile. program starts in aug 07 12 months program. it is cheaper there about 3,000.00. but i have been accepted to medvance which is $24,000.00 but there are two test you have to take to get accepted. the ati, and the nln entrance score with a 40 percentile. test consist of reading, math, and science.

the net consist of reading and math.

now there is another school that starts on march 07 called florida national college they are having orientation on jan 25 but you have to call to schedule an appt, tuition is $ 19,000.00.

by any chance are you in mdc and what are you majoring?

lizzy

Hi Lizzy,

Thanks for your reply. My major is Elementary Education but I also have my Cardiovascular Tech license. I went to Mercy Hospital last week and registered to take the entrance exam on May 10th. How does the LPN program at Miami Dade work? How about the program at Medvance, how many days a week will you have to attend?

Thanks for all the info.

Aida

hi, well in miami dade you just have to take the net the nurse entrance exam, score above a 70 percentile. program will begin aug 2007. after you take the test you apply for the program application is due before may 1st 2007, but you have to take the net test first its walk in- at the medical campus at 950 nw 20 street.

for medvance where i was accepted you have to take the nln entrance exam and score a 40 percentile consist of reading, math, and science. this test is a little harder than the net. net is basic reading and math... but i am planning to go ahead and take the net test also at mdc because the school is cheaper. medvance is expensive $24,000. mdc about $3,000.

but however i found out about a forgiveness program that they have when you complete your program where they help u to pay back your nursing loans, but with a contract that u will work for a specific hospital or clinic that they have listed.

well if interested for the lpn at medvance try to hurry cuz, school starts on march 5th which i am going to atten at least the first semester. until i am accepted at mdc, than will transfer if not i will stay at medvance.

medvance school hrs for lpn is 1-5pm mon-thurs-clinicals during the day.

mdc its at the evening, 4-9pm mon -thurs, fri- clinicals.

well i hope i sent you enough info....its kind of tuff with all this nursing req, and pre-req. i am just trying to open doors for myself...soon to be a rn.

this is just my two cents but that's an expensive LPN program. It's not worth the investment since you won't be making that much anyway...na LPN is not an RN...so don't waste your money go for the AS at MDC if you can get in. Have you thought about going to FIU since you already have an AA & BA...i believe it would the same amount of time commitment as miami dade if you have your pre-reqs squared away and an AA...2 yrs vs 2yrs.

nw

Are you a RN? Did you complete it at MDC? well I have already enrolled at MDC. Currently my GPA is 3.1. The only requisite I need is Chemistry. I already put in the application for the Nursing Prgm. Lets see what happens

no, but i did attend MDC for my AA in pre-nursing to get my BSN. I'm currently waiting to see if i get in to schools i applied for. I did my research and unless you have personal circumstances that keep you from being an RN as opposed to LPN or the LPN program is extremely cheaper, it's not a good investment for some people. LPNs don't make as much when you look at the time committment when it comes to schooling as RNs do for the associates program. If i'm not mistaken you already have an AA and a BA so if you can pay for the AS in nursing then go for that instead...the return on investment is night and day. the only other choice is LPN then Bridge to RN but from what i see in your situation you don't have much financial aid left and you need the most bang for your buck with what you have left...the RN seems from the looks of things like the best choice. Kick @$$ in your remainding classes to improve your GPA and hope for the best. Although i think you can get in with your GPA as it is but getting it better doesn't hurt. I had a close friend who started school jsut after me (she is in the MDC nursing program right now) and she got in with a 3.0gpa. word is and that people have gotten in with less even though you hear all over the place that some people got in with so so high GPA. The truth is if you have skill that is required...bilingual, creole or spanish your ahead of the game. You'd be surprised at how many people here ARE NOT truly bilingual even though they may be of hispanic heritage or they claim to speak spanish but really they speak it "todo machacao" as we native speakers would say. Also if you ahve experience in the medical field or healthcare field you get more consideration...even though they'll never come out clean and say it. Bottom line it is a fact that people with lower GPAs have gotten into the MDC nursing program my friend is living proof of such. So don't count yourself out, as my dad always says, el ultimo minuto tambien tiene 60 segundos (the last minute also has 60 seconds).

nw

Also, remember MDC will likely start their BSN program in Spring '08. I'm just finishing my ADN here at MDC (5 more weeks to go!), and from what I heard from instructors, it will be more affordable for MDC students, especially if you're doing the RN-BSN program!
