Miami-Dade College-Classes Full??

Published

Hello all,

I'm currently doing my pre-reqs at Miami Dade College for their A.S. in Nursing, and some of my classmates were telling me they that the Class of 2010 was cut down to size, with all those cut being deferred to the class of Fall 2011, which is now considered full.

They also heard that applications turned in by the cutoff date next year (May 2011) would be for consideration for the class of Fall 2012.

I was shooting for the Fall of 2011, and this news would obviously set me back at least a year. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, just a setback, and all I've got is time...

However, any additional information on this situation would be appreciated. Thanks!

Oh I almost forgot to mention, before going back to school 2 years ago I had a 9 year gap in my education. Because of some unfortunate circumstances I had to drop out in the 9th grade. I didn't go back to school until I was 23 years old. In four years I was able to get my GED, a massage therapy certificate and an AA with highest honors. In august I will be starting my BSN program at Nova. As you can see it is possible with some hard work and motivation. Good luck to you.

@Nursekitty2013: Reading all your responses and advice your giving is really motivating to say I can do it. I graduated high school with a 3.0 and I just have difficulty staying interested in what I am reading(maybe cause i have the tv on as well,LOL)... But you are a true inspiration to me and I congratulate you for having the courage to go back to school after dropping out. Its hard staying in school as it is let alone graduating from it and continuing to go to college. I know I can do it, im just afraid that midway I might give up. I cant stay focus on one thing cause I try to always find the easy way out.

Hi Everyone, I applied for the Spring 2011 FT program at MDC. Please let me know of anything you guys hear on the process. Anything helps! Thanks

@npachon... i also applied for the spring 2011 FT.. i got accepted and i have everything ready to start jan. i'm very exited =).. how has everything turned out for you?

I have heard that it is near impossible to get into the nursing program at MDC because there are too many applicants. Is this true? I really want to go to community college because it is much more affordable but will I have to wait around for two years before I even get in? I haven't started taking my prereqs yet. I have to wait until I finish my English degree at Florida State. Those of you that have applied and gotten accepted, what kind of grades do you have and how many times did you apply? All answers are appreciated. Thanks!

Good Morning everyone, I have been reading all your post and I'm so happy to have found a community that I can relate to and that I can ask questions about my nursing career. I am just now looking into the prerequisites for nursing to start my nursing career eventually... I have learned so much, although I have a few questions maybe you guys can help me out...

The prerequisite courses are taken in full time classes?

How long does it take to finish all the classes before I can apply for the nursing program?

Are the classes hard? I'm not worried about the work load just the work it self. I have a 8 year gap since I left highschool I just now went back and got my GED and I'm looking forward to accomplish my career in nursing so I'm a bit nervous as to what to expect... Any book recommendations for studying... I believe its called the TEAS exam after all the courses right?

I would really appreciate any help from you guys... I don't know what the first thing to do is... I'm considering Miami Dade College as the school of my choice... Any suggestions?

Also, are there study groups that can help or is alone studying better?

what are the hours of the prerequisite classes? is there a partime class available?

When do you know what type of nurse you want to be? ER/OBGYN/OR??? when do you choose??

I'm not sure what questions to ask but if you guys can throw some in even if i didn't ask them but you think it might help I would greatly appreciate it!!

You guys help each other out so much!!

Thanks again in advance!!

Mary

Since I was responsible for starting this silly thread based on a lot of hearsay from people who didn't know what they were talking about, I will take it upon myself to respond to you. While I can't answer all of your questions, and some will just be my opinion, I will give it a shot.

The pre-req classes will be full-time, however you can take as many classes per semester as you can sign up for. Since you have to take AP 1 before 2, two is the minimum amount of semesters it will take. If you have no college experience, you'll need to satisfy core classes such as math and English first.

Are the classes hard? I don't know what your learning style is, so you might find some very easy and others rather hard. I would say that you need to put as much time as possible into studying, because they're very time consuming, especially the Anatomy/Physiology courses, in my opinion. I think that your textbooks will be more than enough to study from, but there are a lot of online resources you can utilize also. Youtube has a surprising amount of great instructional science videos.

The TEAS test is required for application, as are successful completion of all pre-reqs by application date, meaning everything has to be done by the time you hand your application in. I'm thinking that if you have no college experience and are starting from scratch, it should take you no more than 2 years. TEAS test covers reading, math, science and grammar, and you can take it twice within 365 days time, with at least 30 days between test dates. You are allowed to submit the best score of the two tests with your application.

Group vs. Individual study? Depends on how you learn. I learn better when I read material for the first time on my own, and reinforce it by studying with others.

As far as timing, pre-req classes are usually offered by the dozens with lots of different times and days, and at all of MDC's campuses. Many are also offered online, if that is your preference. The classes are mostly offered either 1 day a week for 3 hours or 2 days a week for 1.5 hours each day. Sometimes they go 3 days, 1 hour as well. If you have trouble making it to these classes physically, online may be a good option for you, as l

Ong as you have the self-discipline to watch all the lectures on your own.

Hope this has helped some! If you have any more questions, just ask!

ZeppHead8: I want to thank you so much for taking the time to explain this all to me... I am very new at this so It will take me sometime to get accustomed to this prerequisites and Nursing... I don't have a learning style yet its been 8 years since I last was in school. I guess I will learn as I go and see what works for me.

The TEAS test is something you take after the pre reqs or during? will it contain the subjects I learn in the prerequisites course? When is the best time to take it?

Your saying it will take me at least 2 years to do the prerequisites alone and then study for nursing program correct?

As for the classes I am being offered the opportunity to stop working and attend school full time so I'm going to take advantage of it. I'm more of an hands on kind of person. My biggest fear is the big words and all the new text. I'm gonna have to be living by a dictionary at all times!! LOL sad but true.

I have an appointment with a few colleges this week so Keeping my fingers crossed I can get this started asap.

Thanks again for all your help!!
