Miami-Dade College-Classes Full??

Published

Hello all,

I'm currently doing my pre-reqs at Miami Dade College for their A.S. in Nursing, and some of my classmates were telling me they that the Class of 2010 was cut down to size, with all those cut being deferred to the class of Fall 2011, which is now considered full.

They also heard that applications turned in by the cutoff date next year (May 2011) would be for consideration for the class of Fall 2012.

I was shooting for the Fall of 2011, and this news would obviously set me back at least a year. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, just a setback, and all I've got is time...

However, any additional information on this situation would be appreciated. Thanks!

Oh, I actually got my letter on friday!!! :-) For the generic full time. I cannot wait!

That's awesome, way to go! I'm super thrilled for you, I guess you're going to be some eyes and ears for us over there :0)

Have you gotten any additional information? Start dates, etc...

Haha I'd be happy to share whatever may be helpful. Right now I don't know much. My orientation is July 15 and there is a required diagnostic test on July 16. It is supposed to test our logic and critical thinking for further advisement.

We need a physical, 5 panel drug test, background check, MMR, 2 PPDs, and varicella titers/vaccines. Hep A and B are optional. All before orientation. :o

UUUUMMM.... I cannot think of much else. But if you have any specific questions, I'll try to figure them out for you, lol. :)

A few questions for the very knowledgable posters on the website:

1.Can u mix up the courses required for the program? (Meaning can u take ENC1101 with a science course or do all the science courses have to be taken together and all the general courses taken together)

2. Is the program Hard as far as the coursework?(Im not worried about the time to complete the homework)

3. Is it hard to be accepted to the program?

4. Whats the hours for the Generic Full-time for RN?

Im starting the Pre-select program this August but they are not allowing u to take ENc1101 with Phi2604 which is required in order to submit an application for the program. How do they expect you to complete all the courses required before the application deadlines? You cant take one without first completing the other. Another question is do you have to complete all the pre-select classes submitting the application or can u just take the most important ones first then the rest after you are accepted to the program?

In conclusion, Im just a confused prospective nursing student who's trying to figure out the best and quickest option for my family and I.

1. Yes you can take classes mixed up. My first semester I took ENC1101, SPC1017, and CLP which is no longer required. You could take MAC1105 or Anatomy 1 + lab if you want. My second semester I took AP1+L, DEP2000, and PHI2604. My third semester, I took AP2+lab, CHM1033+lab, and a humanities course. Last semester I took MCB2010 and MAC1105. I was accepted to the Generic FT although I am no longer going to attend. It is best for me to get my AA. Some people take CHM before their AP sequence, but in my opinion it doesn't really matter. Micro must be taken after Anatomy 1 and Chemistry.

2. Any nursing program is rigorous. It requires a LOT of dedication in regards to time. MDC is a good nursing program, BTW. They have a lot of resources to help you, like free dosage calc tutoring, study cubicles, etc. But any nursing program will be a challenge. There is much information to swallow in a short amount of time. And it is not just reading, but a lot of practice and application of what you learn is involved.

3. Yes, at this time any nursing program is very competitive to get in to, including MDC, FIU, Nova, UM, etc. MDC requires you to have a high science GPA(try to aim above 3.5), and a high score on the TEAS exam. Thousands of people apply to the program each semester. You want to make sure you shine above the rest. There are many Nursing Entrance Exam study guides available on ebay and amazon.com. It covers basic math, english, and I think science, too.

4. Full time is generally in the early morning to early afternoon. A norma day would probably be 8AM-2:30PM with a break or two between your classes. Clinical would be 7A-3PM with a break or two.

I suggest you finish all your pre-reqs before entering the program. Seriously, Nursing school is hard enough and you don't want to take a stupid microbiology class along with it, because you are going to go nuts. I got accepted before I was finished taking math and micro, so yes you can get accepted before finishing all your classes. But I suggest you talk to an Admissions Counselor AT the Medical Campus about what courses to take. My adviser there actually helped me plan out all the classes I was going to take for each semester. I took a long time to finish my pre-reqs because I had surgery and stuff, it doesn't have to take so long to finish those little 30 credits.

Good luck, MDC is a good nursing program and I really hope you get in and achieve your goals. :) If you have any other Qs let me know.

Sls1603, I think the reason why they won't let you take Enc1101 and PHI2604 is because the PHI2604 is a writing class and Enc1101 is needed prior to taking the philososphy class. I just took this philosophy class in the summer at mdc and trust me there is a lot of writing involved. So in order to be successful in this course you need to have completed the basic English class. I suggest picking another class with the English class or if you think you can do it talk to an advisor and see if they can waive this retriction and have you do both courses at the same time. But think about how that might affect your GPA if you don't do well which is a huge factor in you being accepted into any nursing program. Good luck

I GREATLY appreciate your help and feedback for my numerous questions. I try to get advice from all over to make this difficult decision and dedication. Thanks

@ Nursekitty2013:

Yeah that does make sense when u put it that way. Im just the type of person whom wants results now and figure out the directions later. Thanks for your advice

To: On eagle wings:

So I have to maintain 3.5 gpa or higher just to be considered for the nursing program at MDC? Any do u know anything about the Baptist program they are offering after u are accepted to the nursing program? What shpuld i do in order to make sure I maintain that 3.5 GPA cause its been 7 years since i graduated high school so i need to brush up on some skills.

The baptist scholarship looks at everything, GPA, interview, background check and references. Don't rely soley on your GPA for the baptist scholarship as I did. I have 3.8 GPA and thought incorrectly that I would get it. My advice to you is to practice your interviewing skills as well as maintain a good GPA. I would aim higher than a 3.5 for MDC because they have got more competitive in the last few years. Study hard and Ty to stay interested in what you are learning. Try to relate what you learn in class to real life. That's how I stay interested and continue learning. It's a little geeky but it works. Lol
