Hi there! I'm just starting this board to see if anyone out there applied to either the Neuro or Multidisciplinary ICU residencies that Mass Gen is offering for new grads of 2018. I applied to both!
Of course it's totally up to you! That being said, my friend lived at home and was able to survive off this pay. I think unless you had roommates or something, this would be impossible because you can't drive to work so you'd have to live close or commute by T. My friend is like #3000 in line for a parking spot.
Yeah I can definitely see what you're saying. Living off that pay alone without roommates or familial support would probably be challenging. Has your friend been having a good new grad experience at least?
That's just so ****** of MGH. That's like saying we don't need a minimum wage because so many people need jobs. I can't see myself going into debt for experience after already getting my BSN. I will use the interview experience to land an actual job, not one I'm paying for the privilege of having on my resume.
Yeah I can't say I'm in full support of having an "orientation wage" and then transitioning to actual RN pay after 6 months. Just saying they probably still get a ton of candidates who'd gladly accept therefore having no incentive to change the structure. I applied to MGH unaware of this wage structure. I'll entertain interviews if they select me to move forward with the process but if I'd actually accept an offer would be completely dependent on the specifics. After a few offers so far, none of the other big name hospitals i.e. Mayo Clinic or Johns Hopkins pay new grads an orientation wage so that's definitely something to consider. Good luck with your job search!
