MGH absn spring 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi Everyone,

I figured since every other cohort has started message boards about the application process it might be helpful to start one here as well! Has anyone applied to MGH for the January 2017 start In the accelerated nursing program? I've heard a lot of great things about the program and work with 5 nurses who have come from this program as well.

I figured we could all share our experiences and qualifications here.. Good luck to all! I'm so anxious, September can't come soon enough...

Also, our cohort was very mixed. There are some EMTs and some CNAs. There's also one lady who has worked as an LPN. I, for one, had no healthcare experience, aside from coming from a family of nurses lol. I sold myself in my essay. They really look at the whole person when considering an applicant. Another thing that I love is how connected we are with the partners system. Partners is a healthcare alliance. I believe that the major hospitals in it are BWH, MGH, NWH, Spaulding, and north shore, I think. Not sure about north shore, but am sure about the others. One of the ladies in the advising center is a nurse at MGH on a cardiac floor.for med-surg, one of the professors is an oncology nurse at MGH. The other med-surg professor worked at Brigham for years. Both professors have advanced degrees. Doctorates and DNP's. I like having the advisor who's a nurse, because she gets it. She knows the stress we are under, having gone through nursing school herself.

If any of you are coming from Boston, like me, the school is accessible via the mbta. I take the orange line. If you get off at north station, there's a partners shuttle that drops you off at the IHP. It goes to MGH as well.

sorry for the flood of info. I'm just trying to provide info that I wish that I'd had when I was a prospective student.

Also, I entered the program in 2016, but graduated with my first undergraduate degree in May 2015. I went to Boston College. So, they do accept new grads. I am one of the youngest people in my group, but not the youngest. Some girl didn't come to the second day of orientation because it was her graduation day! So, how long it's been since you've received your original bachelor's degree doesn't necessarily matter.

wow, this is really wonderful information, thanks so much for sharing this with us! if you don't mind me asking, what were your qualifications such as your GPA or volunteering experiences?

Ilovenursing15 - Curious if you have met anyone in your cohort that relocated from a long distance? I'm applying from Washington state and have family in the Boston area. Wondering if they tend to select those that are already established locally.

There are some people from California. San Diego, I believe. That's the farthest that I've heard of. A good amount of us are from New England.

I had a 3.7 in pre-reqs. I had a 3.3 in my prior undergrad degree. I actually had no healthcare experience. I worked in publishing. One of the things that I loved about the application is that it didn't require healthcare experience. Some people are nursing assistants. Others like me are not. Healthcare experience won't hurt, but I don't think that it's necessary.

And for volunteer experience, I was part of an organization that helped public school kids in Boston with tutoring. I went to catholic school, but the Boston public schools system is such a large system, that I felt that I'd make an impact by volunteering.

Thank you so much for all of that information! That was super helpful. I believe I have a strong application but I am really nervous. I have a degree in Health and Wellness with a decent GPA and a well-rounded resume. But you just never know with Nursing programs and what they're looking for! Personally they told me we should find out mid-August (about the Spring 2017) start.. whether that's accurate or not, I am not sure. One can hope though :)

Ilovenursing15 - Good to know, thank you!

Hi guys! Do you guys know if MGH IHP offer any scholarships? I just got into Curry College for their absn program. But, they don't offer any scholarships..

MGH IHP does offer scholarships. In the acceptance letter, it'll say that you've been awarded a scholarship (if you were), and then about 3-5 days later, you'll get an email from the financial aid department informing you of the amount. I filled out the diversity statement, and I believe that that is how they figure out who'll get a scholarship.

Thank you for replying! Does the scholarship covers full or part of the tuition? I didn't fill out a diversity statement. Does it mean I'm not getting any?

I haven't heard of anyone getting a full scholarship, and that's just because we don't really discuss our finances or anything like that. Not saying that it isn't possible. I just know that I didn't get a full scholarship lol. See if you can find the thread for the summer 2016 cohort or maybe even earlier cohorts. I want to say that I've heard of some people who got scholarships without even filling out the diversity statement. I just figured it out because I felt that it couldn't hurt. I'm sorry, I'm not 100% certain on all this.
