Methodist Hospital of Dallas

Published

Hello Everyone,

I have accepted a job for GN internship at Methodist Hospital of Dallas, but someone told me that it is not a good place to start my nursing career. Methodist is not a nurse friendly hospital so nurses they don't stay there 75% of their nurses are agency nurses. They don't have a good benefit and they only pay $21.00/hr. Most of my friends are getting paid 24.00/hr other areas not in dallas I also know that Ut Southwestern starts $23.00/hr. Since I started applying late I may not have a lot of choice payment wise, but I am worried about the working condition.

I am wondering if I should take the job or not. If anyone knows about this hospital please advise. Thank you in advance.

Even the officially designated Nurse Friendly Hospitals rarely live up to their names and I haven't seen a hospital in a while that had a low vacancy and/or turnover rate.

Of the various hospitals in Dallas that I've worked in, none have been up to the standards of prior employers so I can't give you anything specific about Methodist nurses and their thoughts on how the hospital runs. The hospital isn't in the greatest part of town and I have heard the nurses do not like the type of clients this hospital serves.

I can tell you that I've worked at UTSouthwestern hospitals and I do know that they also utilize a lot of agency. The nurses I worked with were unfriendly and unhelpful. I was lucky enough on several occasions to have nursing students The students helped me get my work done because the nurses declined to assist with lifting, etc. The nursing students thought I was great because they told me that none of the other nurses let them do anything and the other nurses wouldn't teach the students anything.

I also have issues with UT Southwestern due to their improper use of money and the coverups that have occurred. Their admin team has not acted according to the ethics and values that I believe a healthcare facility should embrace.

There is always going to be something bad about every hospital. You will have to accept a position, get some experience, and decide which kind of baloney you can put up with.

How recently have you been with UT Southwestern? I have had two clinical rotations there and have found the opposite to be true. There are *some* nurses that aren't willing to help out students, but most of the ones that were like that were agency nurses. I never really saw more than one agency nurse per shift, if any at all, on the units I was on. Most of the nurses were really great about teaching students. I enjoyed my experience there, and was inspired by several exceptional nurses.

As far as the ethical concerns go, I think every hospital would be lying if they claimed not to have some kind of "VIP" system going on for certain patients, whether it be written or unwritten. UT Southwestern was just unfortunate enough to have their list leaked to the public.

I am happy that you have had a good experience at UTSW. Last year I found it to be below my standards as well as the standards of other facilities I have worked in.

As I have much more experience in this arena than you do, I am well aware that there are many facilities that are engaged in dubious if not dishonest and illegal actions. I have been asked to engage in those actions and promptly reported those facilities and left. There is much more going on at UTSW than just the VIP list. As someone new to nursing I can understand if you are unable to be choosy for whom you work for. I however, make every attempt to avoid facilities who have had their dirty little secrets come out when they are obviously not putting the best interest of the public and their staff first. When I do work for a facility and later learn things about them I usually have a plan of action to address the issues.

I have also had 2 clinical opportunities at UTSW.....one at St. Paul, and one at Zale Lipshy.

In turn, I have chosen to start my nursing career at UTSW - Zale Lipshy.

It's unfortunate that the above poster had a bad experience there because the great staff influenced me enough that I'm driving about an hour to work for UTSW.

(Yes, I saw good and bad, but the overall experience was positive.)

nurse 008 have u tried parkland or childrens hospital?

Specializes in ED, ICU, PACU.

Went there as a GN. Every thing you heard is true! I found it to be a very abusive environment & extremely political.

I personally have worked at UTSW. The facility is a physician driven facility that does not support the nursing staff. I can also tell you from first hand experience that the corruption is on the main campus, not so much at the hospitals, but they do all fall under one umbrella.

Methodist has been through many changes over the years and I could not comment on whether it is a good place today.

It seems that all hospitals utilize consulting companies at some point and the staff nurse feels the impact the most. If you are looking for a strong nurse driven place to work, I would suggest looking at Parkland.

Specializes in OR Internship starting in Jan!!.

I did a clinical rotation at UTSW - St. Paul in 4 different units. As a student I have had rotations at 4 different hospitals in the Dallas area. My experience at St. Paul was the best experience I have had. I was impressed by the nursing staff and the facilities. Yes, there are some 'bad apples' but overall, the nurses were the most helpful I've encountered. I even went so far as to praise 2 of the nurses to their bosses, to show how much they had helped me. I plan to apply there when I finish school.

Good luck to you!

Specializes in Emergency Department.
