Merritt College ADN Program Fall 2010 - What does "Alternate" mean????

Published

Hello, everyone:

I am hoping someone can help me - I just received notification from Merritt College (NOT Samuel Merritt) that I "have been selected as an alternate for admission". When I called to find out exactly what this means, they were not clear. I asked what number I was on the lottery list so that I could get an idea as to how likely it would be that I could get in (e.g. 1 on the alternate list vs. 10) - they said they didn't use numbers.

When I asked how they decided which alternate would get in if a spot opened up, they could not answer at all.

Does anyone know how this works? Was anyone an alternate to Merritt who did or didn't get in?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated - I've already been rejected from one school, am anxiously waiting to hear back from two, and just got this "alternate" letter, so am kindly teetering on the verge of insanity!!! :crying2:

thanks crazy_man!

i try not to get too serious about what others people say. because nursing is hard. my sister graduated 2009 from CCSF. she said they had problems with their teachers too. but they couldnt really do anything. she just studied harder. it is a community college. resources might not be alot. plus, i wana start already and finish school. i didnt get in to CCSF and more letters saying i didnt make it is too stressing for me. So, im going to try. BUT it does scare me. I heard it is always good to start reading the book in the summer. I think that is a good idea. there are some people who did graduate from those years. Everytime i think about all of those reviews, I just always say to myself just study hard. forget about your social life for awhile. ahahahha. i might still apply to other schools. but its so tiring and ridiculously stressful. -___-

anyways, cya orientation too?

i'm so glad i'm not alone!!!

:)

yea will definitely see you all there, just yell out your screen name so i know who you are, hehe!

I'll see you both there. I'm trying really hard to stay positive - a Merritt counselor told me thar last year there were 500 total applicants - 175 were given a spot, but only 95 accepted....

i just wish i understood my chances better! :( I took my prereqs at Merritt last semester, and really liked it...

wow, 95 accepted, on the CA Nurs, NCLEX pass rate, only 24 graduated...those are some serious issues...oy vey.

need a drink.

sheilam - ALWAYS POSITIVE! you should definitely go. did u apply anywhere else?

Thanks, Kay26 - you're right. It's just so hard in the face of rejection... :(

I also applied to CCSF (didn't get in :( ), Chabot (I am out of district, so the best I can hope for is a high number alternate) and Ohlone (I haven't heard back yet)...

I won't know if I got into Ohlone for another couple of weeks...I just can't bear the thought of having to wait another year. I am jsut so ready to take the next step career-wise, you know? :uhoh3:

i dont think 24 means only 24 people graduated. does it? i thought it meant 24 people who graduated from merritt college took nclex during those 2008/2009. coz one of the schools said 1 for 2008.2009. i dont know!!!

hahah. good for you craizy_man! have a drink! :D

I have Dominican as a back up, but they are telling me it's 1-3 semesters wait, on top of their tuition I just don't know. I hope this orientation relieves some stress. I'm waiting on Los Medanos, and Chabot, got like #416 on CCSF's lottery....I guess there is a tendency for more people to gripe about the program when their having difficulties with it.

Let's face the fact, We got in, and thats an accomplishment in it of itself, lets shake our groove thang. this will all come later.

I will call them tomorrow, i have a list of questions already, ill come back on here and try to tell you what they've told me, we'll tag team this. only way to survive is if we stick together.

According to the Board of RN website, 24 sat for the NCLEX in 2009, and about 95% passed (about 23 people).

I think this means that 24 people graduated, because you gotta graduate to take the NCLEX, right?

for CCSF i cried my eyes out. coz so close to where I live and my sister graduated from there. and the fact that my parents put her diploma and nursing license on our living room and my parents are RN's. soo much pressure. ohlone they only accept 20 both sem and i didnt have time to do their stupid reading test. chabot, i was in the Philippines during their application period. i was gonna apply to modesto. but thats in may. and I was gna apply to more schools in during summer/fall since I'm finally done with some pre-reqs for them. but i got this letter. soo... we shall see.
