Best ADN/BSN program in SFBay? ok to base on NCLEX pass rate?
HEllo, I must respectfully disagree with EllieBean regarding Ohlone (where I currently attend NS). There is no preference regarding where you love - over half of my class does not live in the Newark/Fremont area (where the school is located). I love the nursing facilities (brand new "green" building with it's own simulation lab (I feel that the sim lab is very important, and some schools don't have their own- I have heard that Chabot doesn't, but I may be wrong). Given that Ohline is one of the many lottery based ADN pogroms in NorCal, I feel their unique application process gives you a more than decent chance to be accepted (it requires more work in the form of mandatory orientation, testing, etc, but in the end you end up in a pool of 200-300, rather than a pool of 600-1000+ like many of the othe CCs). And best of all (to me), Ohline has. Fall and spring program, each containing 20 students- so your odds of being selected are still pretty good, and you have a nice small class size- no worries About the school "weeding out" students and better one-one one attention :) Finally, while the course are challenging, they are interesting and well taught. As far as I know, none of my classmates were "C" students in prereqs (you must have a minimum "score", calculated based on prereq grades, repeated courses, etc, in order to be eligible to apply. While I cannot remember the programs exact NCLEX passing rate, I believe it is 97-98%- not bad at all :). And our professors are WONDERfUL. You can probably tell I love my program- I was impressed with their organization from day one of the application process, and continue to be impressed with the program overall. :) On a different note, if you want an ADN but don't want to deal with the lottery, I have heard that Chabot has dropped the lottery (and residency requirement) and starting next year will select students based on merit alone. Good look on your nursing quest - I too am a "second degree-er" but have no regrets- I love NS :)

How many people here HAVE NOT become CNA certified before applying to Nursing school?
I got into my ADN program on the first try- however, it was a lottery system :) I did not have my CNA cert, but like Sandi said, you can get it after passing your nursing Fundamentals class. However, here in CA you do have to take the CNA cert test- you just get to bypass the whole CNA course (so end up paying $90 instead of $1000). I am taking the cert this Monday- I figured it was cheap, and I already know the material/skills I will be tested on - so why not?

Starting Ohlone Fall 2010/Spring 2011
Hello Charmantun! I was accepted for Spring 2011 - I agree, it's been very quiet here since emails went out. I'll admit, I haven't been doing much in terms of preparation so far - all my prereqs are done, so other than reviewing anat/phys, I have just been enjoying what is probably the last moments of free time I'll have after Jan! :) Good luck on getting in - I haven't heard anything about being bumped up to Fall yet, so I don't know where the list currently stands...then again, I was #34, so didn't really anticipate being moved up to Fall. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! :)

Ohlone Fall 2010 - did you get an email?
Hello, everyone: The results are now on the website: http://www.ohlone.edu/instr/nursing/docs/20102011nursinglotteryresults.pdf

Ohlone Fall 2010 - did you get an email?
They are taking 20 for fall and 20 for spring - as I understand it, if anyone in the Fall class (#s 1-20) declines, they move people in the Spring class (#s 21-40) up to fall. They will then move people on the waitlist up based on their number. So if 1 person in Fall declines, 1 person from Spring joins the Fall class and #41 on the list gets to be in Spring.

Phlebotomy and/or EKG tech cert before starting nursing school?
That's a great question! I start nursing school next Spring, so if others recommend this, I would love to know as well. Thanks for posting it, Reebles.

Good luck! What number are you on the waitlist? We know at least one person who got in isn't going (jennafez from an earlier post I think). I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Merritt College ADN Program Fall 2010 - What does "Alternate" mean????
According to the Board of RN website, 24 sat for the NCLEX in 2009, and about 95% passed (about 23 people). I think this means that 24 people graduated, because you gotta graduate to take the NCLEX, right?

Merritt College ADN Program Fall 2010 - What does "Alternate" mean????
Thanks, Kay26 - you're right. It's just so hard in the face of rejection... I also applied to CCSF (didn't get in ), Chabot (I am out of district, so the best I can hope for is a high number alternate) and Ohlone (I haven't heard back yet)... I won't know if I got into Ohlone for another couple of weeks...I just can't bear the thought of having to wait another year. I am jsut so ready to take the next step career-wise, you know?

Merritt College ADN Program Fall 2010 - What does "Alternate" mean????
I'll see you both there. I'm trying really hard to stay positive - a Merritt counselor told me thar last year there were 500 total applicants - 175 were given a spot, but only 95 accepted.... i just wish i understood my chances better! I took my prereqs at Merritt last semester, and really liked it...

Merritt College ADN Program Fall 2010 - What does "Alternate" mean????
I've heard that too, kay26 - but I believe if you work hard and really want it, it will work. :) (though i'm starting to think that doesn't quite apply to lottery situations!) I'll definitely see you at orientation - if I get in (cross your fingers for me!) maybe we could get together? :) See you then!
