Mercy School of Nursing Charlotte Wait List

Hi,

I applied to the fall semester at Mercy School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC and just received notification that I've been placed on their wait list. The letter provided little information on the process. It says "August is filled at present, but we will notify you promptly if space becomes available." I'm just wondering if anyone has found themselves in a similar situation and what the outcome was? I have a BA in a unrelated field and a graduated with a good GPA (3.42) so I'm a bit surprised I was wait listed. Your thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Even though your GPA is good most likely there are more applicants with higher ones than yours. Did you complete all the pre-reqs? I hope they call you soon and you can start school.

I've completed all of the prerequisites except for Anatomy I and II which I will be taking over the summer.

I actually received an acceptance letter from Mercy over the weekend. Similar situation, I have a BA in another field however I requested their part-time evening/weekend program. I know they rank the people on the waitlist and as people either decline the acceptance or do not return their deposit they turn to the waitlist. I know it requested my information and deposit be returned by 3/24 if that helps any. Best of luck to you!

I am currently a student at Mercy in my second semester. They are very good at calling you if a space becomes available. I was on the waitlist for fall of 2008, but I had finished all my pre-req's....they called me two weeks before the semester began, they told me I jumped up the list because my grades were really great in my completed pre-req. I also have a B.S. degree. If you have to wait, my suggestion would be to get all of your pre-req's out of the way. The first semester is a killer, they jump between subjects and there is a lot of clinical work. Plus, the tests are based around the NCLEX, so they are completely different than any test you have probably taken. It is not impossible, but they make it hard for a reason.....they want you to be the best nurse possible. Also, if you aren't a CNA, I would suggest going ahead and getting certified. The first exam is based off of basic nursing skills, it will also help you with your clinicals. Good luck....you will love it, its a small school so lots of one on one attention.

Hello Mercy students-

I, too, have a BA and MS in other fields. I am a part-time CNA as well, and I am interested in the part-time evening/weekend program. I cannot find any info or proper website to talk about the programs. What are the hours? Prereqs? Nights of School? Etc...? Can anyone provide me with a link with more info?

Thanks so much!

Karrikon

The following is the link to the page of Mercy School of nursing, that contains a pdf file of the current schedule and handbook...in the handbook, it details the weekend and evening course..... http://www.cmc-mercy.org/body.cfm?id=113&oTopID=0

I hope this helps

Update: I ended up being accepted from the wait list and I'm almost done with my first semester. I will begin the accelerated program next semester.

Im concerned about spending the next year completeing the science pre req's and not knowing for sure if I will be accepted in Jan 2011. I have decided to switch careers from Hospitality Mangement to Nursing. Definitely a completely different field. Right now I am employed with the Government and I have to admit that sitting at desk 8 hours a day is not what I want to do for the next 20 years. Any advice.

Hi there - New to site & need some advice from others regarding Mercy waitlist - I am # 27 on the waitlist for Fall 2010 & was just wondering if there was anyone out there who was waitlisted & got in & if so, were you as high as me? The letter says that if a spot is not available this fall, your application will be reviewed for Spring 11 - I have been accepted to York Tech, but Mercy is my top choice - I have to decide by tommorrow if I am going to accept other school & just really need some help from those of you who have been in my shoes. Thanks so much! :p

When I applied Mercy did not revel what number you were on the waiting list so I don't know if I was higher or lower than you are now. In my case I didn't get my acceptance letter until 2 or 3 weeks before the semester began. The wait was brutal but I'm glad I stuck it out. Mercy is a great school and I'm very happy with the education I am receiving there. Best of luck to you!

I do not recommend going to Mercy. I completed 7 weeks there and dropped. I did not have a good feeling about the program. It is only a Diploma-you do not receive a degree. They do jump around a lot between subjects. There is 120 clinical hours required each semester instead of the usual 80 at other schools. I was working my butt off, barely passing. MSON is a hospital based bed-side nursing program.

It's very stressful and don't feel the amount of effort I was putting into it was worth getting a Diploma. I just kept thinking, I have to get through these 5 semesters and I STILL have to get the RN-BSN for another 4 semesters. It did not make sense. Yes, I have a previous BS degree in Business/Marketing from USC. I was #16 on the waitlist. I moved up very quickly. A girl in my class was #30 and got in at last minute. Many people use MSON as a last resort-turn it down when they get accepted someplace else. I hope to attend Queens U. in the fall in the BSN program.

If you insist on going, take the Nurse Aide course first and go ahead and get certified. Also, get ALL prereqs done first, even easy ones. You will want that NA certification because you will most likely drop from the program (many people do). I also recommend applying to a backup program at another school for the following semester. So, when you drop out of Mercy, you'll be set to go somewhere else the folloing semester.

Read literature on BSN. That is what is going to be required eventually.
