Mercy School of Nursing in Charlotte

Published

anyone out there been to this nursing school or know anyone who has? i would like to find someone to talk to that has been or is in this school. i am accepted into their program and will begin in may 2006. this is all new to me and would like some insight if at all possible. thanks!!

I graduated from Cabarrus College of Health Sciences in December. Mercy accepted me, but CCHS accepted me the semester before so I went where I could go FIRST. I have heard great things about Mercy! A hospital based course is definitely the way to go. People who take hospital based courses have much higher percentage passing NCLEX (not to knock education based programs because the knowledge base is a great thing to have-just keeping to statistics). Look on board of nursing to review. It will bring you comfort.

Since they've accepted you, I would RUN to accept and start. It's so hard to get into nursing school. I was always told to go wherever you are accepted. Once you obtain the RN, you can do anything.

Good luck!

okay. thanks. i just hope that they have a better success rate than one of my local cc. i have a friend who went to a local cc, and flunked out the 4th semester by 3 tens of a point! but also when she began in the prior fall semester she had 60 in her class, but by the 4th semester there were only 5 of the original 60 left! they have a very high failure rate. so that makes me nervous needless to say...

I'm guessing they all have a high failure rate. My college started out with 50 in NSG110. By NSG230, we had about 18 of the original 50. Graduated with 28. (The extras were ones we picked up that had to repeat semesters somewhere along the way.) I think it's pretty common to have to repeat a semester. There is always a subject in nursing school that is hard to grasp (i.e. pharmacology).

I wouldn't get caught up in that. ALL nursing schools are difficult to get through.

Nursing school is like one big, long study session for the NCLEX. The tougher the school, the better your chances of passing boards.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

oh i see. well i will begin there in may and the lady i spoke with said they start out with fundamentals of nursing. so i plan on going there and giving it my all. my class will graduate in 12/2007, or those that make it will anyway. i just hope i can do it. i am 35 yrs old with 2 kids in school and have been out of school some 17 yrs now...but the good thing is all i need to take the first semester is the first nursing course since i have everything elase but micro finished and will take that in the fall semester.

You can do it! I am 41 with three kids in school. You did the smart thing- - I got all co & pre's out of the way except Micro and A & P2. People who take full loads with nursing don't make it.

There were lots of people in there 30's and 40's in my class. I'd say 1/4 of our class were older. Mature people seem to do better. You want it more and have all the "partying" out of your system.

Your first nursing course is going to blow you away. It's very hard, but keep your eyes on the prize. You can do it! The key is to make a group of supportive friends and help each other along the way. I wouldn't have made it without my nursing buddies! Nobody except the people in it can understand what it is like. It's not like taking a few classes at CPCC. It takes drive and determination and consumes your life. But, once again, it's worth it.

Remind me I said that if I get poor results on NCLEX tomorrow. (I took it yesterday.)

You can do it!

wow! i sure hope you did well on the nclex yesterday! i know this is gonna be tough for me but it is something i have wanted to do for a long time now. but with all the horror stories i have been hearing about nursing schools i keep finding that i am second guessing myself. i do not expect it to be easy by no means, but i think i will need alot of support along the way.

do you live in concord? i am originally from salisbury, and most of my family still lives there. my mom lives in stanfield and i live in monroe. she has given us some acreage there in stanfield but i wanted to wait til i was out of school before i thought about moving.

thanks for all your input, i really appreciate it!

I'm in Harrisburg. I grew up in Charlotte, and my husband grew up in Spencer. Not too many people know where that is, but I'm guessing you do! ha!

Thanks for kind words- - I hope I passed it. I really need to pass it because I need to get to work. I have a job waiting at Univ ER if I did pass it. I'm very excited about it, but everything hinges on that NCLEX.

In my other life I processed mortage loans. This is a lot different!

It's a small world, isn't it???

I'm off to my friend's house now. She is taking a public speaking class and wants to practice her way too long speech on me! I was worried she couldn't get to five minutes and she's wondering how to keep it under 10.

Bye!

yep, my granny lives in spencer! yes it is a small world.

well go and have fun with your friends speech- i hate those things! and again good luck with that nlex score! keep in touch!:clown:

Congratulations!!! Mercy is an excellent school - I graduated from Carolinas College. Some of Mercy's classes are held at our school.

I work in the Pediatric ICU at CMC (graduated May 2005). I had previously worked as a unit secretary in the PICU ... we've always hired new grads from Mercy and gotten terrific nurses.

You can do it. I was 45 when I started back to school - I was hard but it is SO worth it:balloons: :balloons: :balloons:

any pointers? i am very anxious to get started as well as nervous at the same time....

Hey! Mercy has a 100% pass rate the last few semesters. I believe the only in charlotte.

And answering to the other poster, YES there is a HIGH (high high) failure rate. You start with 45-50, usually lose about 10 that first semester. You end up with about 10-15 to graduate with.
