Hi Folks
Just wondering if there were any (Australian) mental health nurse practitioners on the board?.. ..and if so, is the MHNP role sufficiently developed here to make it a worthwhile career choice?
I'm from Queensland and we have a single MHNP at the moment as part of the NP project/trial. I gave QH central office a call but they were unable to supply me with any scope of practice info for this specific role, offering only a generic NP position description.
Just curious to know how it differs from being a CNC in a mental health environment and so forth.
I think that all makes sense. I'm off to bed now.
Thanks,
David

I think NSW has more MHNP's than QLD does hopefully one of the New south Welshmen who frequent the board will be able to answer you;)

Hey David, perhaps you can talk to your Nursing Director. I heard that NP for MH is still undergoing some 'fine tuning'. From what I can gather, the NP course which QUT is offering is catered more for general nursing. You need to show interest by bringing this up with your NUM and then he/she can bring it up with the ND. In any case, whatever you find out will be of interest to a whole lot more people than you realise ................... so, please post your findings here ................thank you.:roll
I saw more info on this lately. You can contact ANZCMHN Inc. Apparently, they have scholarships available for selected nurses to gain Masters degree (thru UQ or QUT) enabling them to become NPs.
