Any UQ Master or Nursing Studies students here?
Hi Scrubby, I suspect UQ it trying to align with the US trend of graduate entry courses, which tend to be called a masters (or doctorate). They've had grad entry masters in OT and Physiotheraphy for quite some time. On the second question, at least in the public system, I wouldn't think so. You'd be a first year nurse give or take. Prior background in another health profession might allow you to negotiate a higher paypoint though (once again, talking from a public system perspective).

Any UQ Master or Nursing Studies students here?
Hi Scrubby I'm wondering about the graduate entry (pre-reg) Master or Nursing Studies that UQ started offering this year. Seems to be the way to go for me, but I'm yet to find folks who've actually done (well, are doing) it. Regards, David

Any UQ Master or Nursing Studies students here?
Hi All Just wondering if there are only UQ Master of Nursing Studies students on the board? I'm looking to start the course and was wondering what the workload was like in the first year? I'll probably need to work part-time thoughout the course and just wondered how plausible that was with the full-time course load. Thanks, David

PDA's for Aussie nurses?
Hi Tina PDAs aren't all that common in Queensland Health (yet) as they are still in the trial stage; a lot of questions about handhelds being connected to the network need answering. That's for QH purchased ones; personal ones can't be connected. MIMs and a bunch of other health databases are available through every PC and there's always one around. My 0.2 cents: Probably not worth it in Queensland. David

Need help! not coping
Hi Meg I'm assuming you are doing your course through a TAFE, but... it might be possible for you to reduce your study load and take some units that aren't too difficult such as ethics or communications. You would then be able to get back into a full time study next semester. David

Is Informatics Nurse a degree program?
In Australia RNs can do a 1 year 'Bachelor of Nursing Informatics' Central Queensland University. Otherwise anyone can do postgrad study in health informatics mix this with a nursing background and viola! Nurse Informatition.

Mental Health NPs in Australia?
Hi Folks Just wondering if there were any (Australian) mental health nurse practitioners on the board?.. ..and if so, is the MHNP role sufficiently developed here to make it a worthwhile career choice? I'm from Queensland and we have a single MHNP at the moment as part of the NP project/trial. I gave QH central office a call but they were unable to supply me with any scope of practice info for this specific role, offering only a generic NP position description. Just curious to know how it differs from being a CNC in a mental health environment and so forth. I think that all makes sense. I'm off to bed now. Thanks, David

Nursing in the military
Apologies Grace. The way I read it, I thought you mean only ADFA graduates were commissioned officers and direct entry officers weren't.
-
Nursing in the military
Just so we're clear on the last post, all officers regardless of entry method are commissioned. Non Commissioned Officers are those in enlisted ranks with a rank of Corporal or higher.

Nursing in the military
I'll add my two cents here as I'm an army reserve medic. The military does use agency staff (both nurses and docs), but only in their Australian facilities. None of the agency staff ever get deployed overseas or the like. The unfortunate reality is that the defence force simply cannot staff the nursing and medical corps to capacity. The role of a medic (Medical Assistant) is a bit of a mix of an EN and Paramedic. Now I'm sure there will be some howls of outage at the mere suggestion of this but there are some functions that medics perform that are usually legislated as 'doctor only' in civilian practice. this is just a reality of the medical/nursing professions in the military; there aren't enough other staff to do everything and nobody ever wants an officer running out into a battlefield when you can risk enlisted medics instead ( )

Info on nursing
Hi pitanI don't think you need to use the term 'male nurse'. It's bit like saying 'female doctor' and redudant as all nurses all created equal. It's probably fair to say more guys like to go into ED, psych and management roles though. A first year nurse in QLD Health starts on about $40K gross. Then there's always the shift penalties. Advancement opportunities to higher levels are pretty decent too once you've accrued some clinical experience. If your qualification if degree level, QUT offer a 2yr graduate entry nursing degree. nursing school and stat score
Hi Simona If your degree is somehow recognised in Australia, you shouldn't have any trouble getting into GU nursing. From what I recall stat is more of a supplement to your exisiting education and an indicator of how you'll perform rather than a method for entry in its own right; I could be wrong though. David
