How do people feel about male nurses?

Nurses Men

Published

I'm 20 and a NJ National Guard Infantry men and I'm think about go to school for my RN. I was wondering is there a Demand for male nurses, and how do male nurses fit in this field. I enjoy helping people and connecting with them and I feel like this would be a good career for me.

Why is it a given? I know several male L & D nurses. It's not like there are only female obstetricians or something. [emoji57](Response is to the poster above me. My quote didn't take)

OP, I work with a bunch of great nurses, and some are even men! :)

Not even men!

Are you saying men can be whatever they want to be? Even nurses? And that they are no different a worker than anyone else?

Whoa.

This topic belongs in the same fiery pit of hell that the "ED vs. the world" topics belong.

Or PVT good pop up.

PVT anything!!!

A nurse is a nurse. It doesn't matter whether the chromosomes are XX or XY. What matters is ability to do the job.

Murses are man purses.

Well those are okay too. [emoji12]

Please. They are just nurses. Gender doesn't change that.

Was not trying to be gender biased. Was making a joke.

Like others have said its true gender doesn't really matter on a resume.

On another note I really don't think this should be a "touchy" subject he was just asking a question. Lots people think nursing is a job for women (which is ignorant) so I can understand someone who isn't in the field, asking if his gender will be a factor in getting hired.

Well, he asked if there was a "demand for male nurses", not if being male would be a factor in getting hired.

We've seen many posts like this.

You are right in giving OP the benefit of the doubt, though. :)

I think being male can be a positive factor in being hired, in areas where size and strength are valued. Also, I think men tend to get the job done without as much drama as some women.

I don't think it's a negative except....not too long ago I know a male student who was told in clinicals that being in labor and delivery as well as in peds could be a bit of a problem to some clients--not to those he works with nor to those who hired.

I don't know if it truly helps to get hired, but I love my male coworkers! They tend to stay out of drama.

Sometimes you get over utilized in heavy tasks, like lifting. As a petite weaker person, I appreciate my male coworkers helping me out. So it's a bonus for everyone else that you are (possibly) strong, but you might get annoyed by constantly being requested to help.

I'm a male nurse and yes, you get treated differently at times. I will be asked to a different pod to help lift or move many times.

A few patients will ask for a female nurse for some intimate care so I let our PCA do it, who is usually female.

Many co-workers say they prefer working with men because of less drama.

My managers treat me like everyone else as they should.

Personally I think Murse is a dumb word but I couldn't care less if people use it.

I highly doubt you'll get hired solely on the fact of being male, and I hope you don't get hired for that fact.

But yes, you will be treated different at times because you ARE different. That is a good thing. Diversity is a great thing. Some of the women I work with are "tougher" than some men and a lot less drama. I'd rather work with them then some of the guys at my place.

Bottom line, go to work, be the best nurse you can and get over the fact that some people are treated different. This is the real world :)
