  1. Why do nurses fight so much with one another?

I have to add to some of the above comments. Many nursing units have a lot of problems because it is accepted. I will always miss diploma nurses. They we loyal to nursing, often wore their caps, and I found them the best mentors. There are usually a ...
  2. Question re: ED and mental health

Our ER has a sexual assault nurse expert program which falls into forensics nursing. There is no shortage of psych in a larger ER. I agree though, less psych and more psych crisis management and referral. I never saw myself being an ER nurse and took...
  3. Senior in high school, dreaming to be a nurse!

Don't sweat the job market. There will be a shortage for a long time. If nursing is what you want to do then do it. The CNA is a good idea but if you network you can probably get a position in the field somewhere. Unit secretary, registration, etc. I...
  4. To be or not to be...that's why I need your help!

I second the cliff notes humor! If you want to do it you will. I also became a CNA to be able to work while I went to school and also to see if I could do the things you speak of. It never really bothered me. I relate to kids diapers. The first one y...
  5. LTC retention

I totally agree! I hope you have good luck with finding a position you can enjoy. Nurses work too hard for the title not to enjoy their practice.
  6. Getting Out

WOW!! You made six months. You must have skills. You survived nursing school so I know you have been tried by fire! Now, don't feel special because you feel over worked and scared to death. Everyone is. Those who aren't scare me. Med-surg means you a...
  7. opinions on Magnet hospitals?

Working towards magnet brought many changes for the better. There was a lot of nurse involvement that has only become better post receiving magnet designation. Our hospital had very high standards before magnet, though. I luckily work with a lot of a...
  8. Just need to vent and have some encouragement (long)

Wow! I have a few thoughts after reading your post. Really more questions. LOL. First, I always say, "You worked too hard for your license to let anyone, nurse, manager, patient or family keep you from enjoying being a nurse." Nursing is a truly hono...
  9. Floor Emergencies

I prefer a tactful, "Can I get some help in here!" Yelling makes the neck hair rise. lol. We just get a code call for the floors! Nothing like spontaneity!
  10. New RN who doesn't want med surg

We have a 6 month orientation in our ED for new grads. I've worked with lots of new grads in both ICU and ED. You get the best 1-1 learning there. I always recommend new grads start in either. Good luck!
  11. Do you aspirate before giving an IM deltoid injection?

I agree with above. Research based practice will be changing many "Obvious truths" in nursing's future. No more egg white or milk on decubitus ulcers. LOL
  12. not what I bargained for

Yep, normal. Normal in most professions. People are people. You just have to find your niche. When you do, the other stuff will be less bothersome. Like most nurses you are concerned for your patients and want to do the absolute best for them. Politi...
  13. Bitterness At Work

First, don't let any manager, co-worker, patient or family member keep you from enjoying nursing. You worked too hard to not like your profession! However, these people are everywhere. If you can enjoy your work in spite of the "Gremlins" then be tha...
  14. What will you do after floor nursing?

I agree that nursing takes a toll on us. I have been in ED for a while and at 48 twelve hours seems long on some days. I plan to stay as long as I can. I always enjoyed those nurses who still kept doing it in their 50's and even 60's. They taught me ...
