  1. Who starts IV's at night at your workplace?

Either our charge nurse does, then the floating preceptor, and if all else fails, someone from PICU will come over and put one in - if we know in advance it's a hard stick, we just call the PICU from the get-go...(I work in a pediatric hospital... :)...
  2. Dressing up on Halloween... unprofessional?

I work at a pediatric hospital...it's pretty much required to dress up, hehe... We had a fairy theme this year on our floor...so we were all wearing wings and lots of glitter butterfly tattoos, hehe...the kids thought it was hilarious... :)
  3. What are some of your benefits and how good are they?

$50/biweekly for a PPO medical/dental/vision/life plan... 401k match... 20% shift diff for working nights, ~30% for weekend nights... ...along with other random benefits that would be too long to list... Definitely love my job (and employer, haha!)
  4. I graduated in May 2008, first nursing job started in January 2009 was pediatric psych in a private hospital for a year and a half, and then switched to working med-surg at one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country...had almost no orientation...
  5. Four 10's or Five 8's? Which would you do?

4 10s, without a doubt in my mind, haha!! :)
  6. Asked to job shadow on the day of interview

My job interview was like this - interview before, shadow after - and I was offered the job within 18 hours, hehe... Good luck! :)
  7. scared i'm going to lose my license..

Congratulations!!! I just got out of a similar situation like that - scarily similar, actually - I have 4 days left at that job, and then on to working at one of the best children's hospitals in the country, yay!! Good luck to you!! :)
  8. Should I go ahead and get "RN" engraved after my name when

Lol, hilarious thread... I wrote "RN" everywhere for inspiration the second I graduated, down to the index card I kept under my pillow... ...in pencil, hehe... I think that makes me superstious...
  9. Depressed nurse here, lexapro is not helping.

I feel you - I had my own issues during and after nursing school, and used meds and therapy to get through it... Personally, the only way I could do nights is if it's in 12-hr shifts - I couldn't do it if it were in 8's...it messes me up too much... ...
  10. The 1st check as an rn....yay!!! Or nay!!

Nice thread... I just switched from part-time days to full-time nights, and that's a big difference, haha!! I have two goals - to knock out my 2 credit cards, and start saving up for my dream computer - an Apple MacBook Pro - might be a few paychecks...
  11. Can you get good experience at a part-time job?

I worked part-time for my first job, and I loved it - I actually ended up doing pretty much an alternating schedule - one week, I would do 3 days, and the next week, I'd do two days - so, actually, it ended up pretty well! Good luck!
  12. Frustrated by job search.

  13. Okay to email a potential boss?

I emailed my resume to my NM at 8pm at night...I had an interview scheduled 37 minutes later... ...And I had an offer for my dream job (at the dream hospital!) 17 hours after the interview ended. The worst she could tell you is no. I'd do it, haha!!!...
  14. where to go? Emory or a community college

I agree with the others for all the reasons mentioned (and I WENT to Emory) - if for no other reason than this: Do you want to be stuck with that huge price tag and not have a job afterwards to pay it off (assuming you'd be taking loans out) - becaus...
  15. Question regarding Humalog insulin

Think about it this way - generally speaking, when using a sliding scale, whatever amount of insulin you give is going to account for the blood sugar and the meal. So if you only have one of those factors (i.e. high blood sugar, but pt didn't eat), t...
