    mellow one, you probably know most of this stuff so bear with me. i'm going to list these as they pop into my head and not in any particular order:

    1. gallon sized zip lock storage bags are worth their weight in gold. you store your clothes in them and they keep the desert dust and sand out of your clothes.

    2. a couple of decks of cards are always advised. a hand gameboy type thing with interchangable games is good, it's kinda boring most of the time in a warzone.

    3. lots of drink powders to mix with the bottled water is good; tang, country time, etc.... hot sauce! garlic powder, onion powder, seasoned salt, any other spice you pack with you.

    4. condoms (no not for the usual reason) to keep the dust and sand out of your m-16 and you can shoot through them in a hurry.

    5. bring an insulated, airmattress to sleep on. the insulated ones stand up to the desert rocks better than the standard issue ones.

    6. thermal underware or a pair of sweats, the desert gets cold at night.

    7. body powder for when you have to go without a shower for a week or so. it really helps. a couple packs of baby wipes takes the place of a shower in a pinch and really gets the sand off the body.

    8. jerky, m&ms, and trail mix to eat for when you get so sick of t-rations and mres you can't see straight.

    9. a good, dependable knife for the usual reasons. a gerber or a leatherman, also for the usual reasons.

    10. some 550 cord, way too many uses to cover here and you will need it. a roll of 100 mile per hour tape for the same reasons.

    11. three poncho liners to hang up around your cot for a tad of privacy. it may just be the illusion of privacy, but it does help when you need it.

    12. bring a good cassette player that records, for audio letters back and forth. burn copies of your cds and take those rather than the originals, no great loss if you have to trash them in a hurried move.

    13. a good footlocker to put all your stuff into. you're in a csh, you'll have the lift for it. talk to your wardmaster, he or she can find room for it in the milvan for your ward.

    i swear they ought to print a book of this stuff. let us know when you're going to ship out and give me your mailing address so i can keep in touch. letters from home help keep your sanity.

    mellow one as an armybrat and an afes worker with the red cross, i'll add a few things to do to the list.
    be sure more then one person knows the following info about you:
    *ssn
    *rank (as in e1, e5, e8 or what ever your rank is, knowing sfc, pfc is ok but will not get your paper work though as fast. working with five branches we have to look up each grade if the family does not know it.)
    *duty station
    *co
    *dob
    make sure they know their local red cross phone number.
    these are good things for them to carry with them, if something happens away from home they can call right away. the faster they call the faster we can reach you.
    another thing you can do is look into the soldiers and sailors civil relief act, i've never had ocassion to use it, but it might be something that applies to you.

    Another option would be to check into LTC, most will do on the job training for CNAs. Though you would still need your GED first. Good luck

    I am planning on moving to Florida this summer. If I were to make $10/hr less then I do here in Missouri, I'll be working for free Honestly after what I have read here, checking into Florida fees and checking other jobs in Florida I doubt I'll be working in nursing there. I will maintain my Missouri license since I do spend time working in Haiti as a nurse there. It doesn't matter what state my license is from so long as it is current for the work I do in Haiti. I will miss nursing and may some day return to nursing in Florida, but I do not think that is what I'll be doing right away in Florida.

    I got my first pair of birkenstocks a few months ago and love them. I would recommend the support hose too. Also checking with oyur doc to make sure there isn't something else going on wouldn't be a bad idea, especially a change in shoes doesn't help.

    I am a LPN in Missouri and am also considering the move to Florida...it seems like there are a lot of nurses here considering that move. Thanks for all the information you have provided thus far. I am not sure exactly were I would be going but most likey around the Vero Beach area. I will be making the move with a horse, so if any one has information about horse cost (hay, land, watering, etc.). Right now I am working in a school and love it. I have never worked in a hospital and don't really care for LTC. I have worked in clinics and enjoy that. I have also done a lot of work in the caribbean and in central america. I did check out the site listed earlier and it does look like I quailify for the licensure endorsment. If any one has more information, I would be interested in hearing it and thankful for it.

    As far as I know schools are not required to have a nurse. I've never seen a law stating that. I know a lot of place are cutting nurses due to budget cuts. W do have one district south of where I live that has 4 or 5 towns in the district with only one nurse. So if there is an emergancy in one of the school the nurse could be 30-45 min. away.

    I am a LPN and a school nurse here in MO. I have worked as a nurse for 6-8th grade for the last 4 years. During the last 2 1/2 years the nurse at our high school has been a LPN. So yes, schools do hire LPNs. I have also been to many meetings of school nurses/public health nurses where there were LPNs working as school nurses.

    I worked H&I for our state's veterans commision, they mandated full time workers there. Being H&I I could not be mandated. Mandation was when someone was mandated to stay after their scheduled shift was completed. Usually due to someone calling in. There was a list kept of who had been mandated if your name was at the top you stayed over. As far as I know only those who were working at the time could be mandated. They were not payed over time for the extra shift, but would get an extra shift off later on. I would check with the policies were you are working for details.

    I volunteer with our local red cross chapter. I know the blood bank workers here always wear gloves when they draw blood.

    I'll have to be different then the rest and say yes there should be some sort of dress code. I have seen to many CNA's tell pt. that they will be their nurse for the evening. A clear name tag isn't enough to ID a nurse for a pt. To many people all the titles are confusing: CNA, LPN, RN, BSN, MSN, PT, OT, RT. We know what all of that means but the average person on the street does't. I don't think all white it the only way to go, but why not dress nurses in blues, CNAs in greens, PT in purples.....whatever color you want, just something to help the pt know who's who. just MHO.

    I'm a school Nurse in Warrensburg and a part time floor nurse for the MVC. I spend my summers volunteering for the Red Cross and traveling overseas working in clinics in developing nations (Haiti, The Gambia, The Dominican Republic, Central America...)
    What a great place to meet people dealing with local issues.
