  1. Lidocaine use/ IV starts

    We are permitted to use lidocaine without a physician order. For our midline/PICC insertions we use Elamax. We wait 20-30 minutes after it has been applied.

    We use the same primary tubing for all units of blood hung in a 24 hour period. We do change the secondary filter with each unit that is hung. This has been a recent change to our policy. Prior to that, we hung two units per tubing.

  6. central line flushes

    At my hospital, routine flush is 2 cc nss followed by 10 units of heparin qd. After blood draws or transfusions we use 10 cc nss/10 units heparin.
  7. Carotid Endarterectomies

    Our patients go to a med-surg floor that handles most of the vascular surgeries. Vitals are usually q 15 min x4, q 30 x 4 q hour x 4 then q 4 hours. 99% of the patients go home the next day.
  8. ADN or BSN?

    I do not have a degree. I went to a diploma program (probably extinct by now). I would however encourage anyone entering this field to get at least a BSN. If you want to advance, a degree is a must
