Where can I get information and education on Hickman catheters and mediports? We see patients in outpatient surgery who present with these catheters and we are asked to access them to administer their preop meds etc. I am not comfortable doing this since we do not do this all the time and are not sure what we can administer through them.
Anyone out there who can help me with this?
Thanks a bunch!

Is your surgery center affiliated with a hospital? If so, contact the IV therapy team (if there is one) or the oncology department to see if they can give you an inservice. Or, see if there is a hickman/port sales rep covering your area to see if they can provide education. Ultimately, it's up to your manager/institution to determine competency and draw up policies on using these devices.
Best Wishes!!
