I did MT before attending nursing school for nearly 20 years. It is highly competitive with much of the work now farmed out digitally to India. Everyone who has ever dreamed of working from home has considered doing it. Voice recognition software is also getting in on what business is there. Doing it part time is almost impossible. There are few boundaries. When the work comes in you are expected to have it turned around quickly,, even if very late at night. Used to be within 24 hours. More recently turn around is expected within about five. If you don't comply you don't get work. Pay is low, by the line typically. I used to get $.10 per line. Rates are far less than that now.

My psychiatrist's office laid off all their transcriptionists a couple of months ago, and my PCP's clinic is down to only 2 for eight physicians! If this is more than just a local trend, I wouldn't invest any time or effort into doing medical transcription......it sounds like it's definitely in a steep decline as an occupation.
