Med Terminology

Published

I decided to get a head start on my basic med term class. EEK! It's challenging. First chapter is on the basic word structure.

I made up flashcards of the prefixes, suffixes and combining forms.

We're using Devi-Ellen Chabner's Medical Terminology: A Short Course 4th edition Very good book- a ton things to fill in. It also came with a cd that has more review on it in a quiz format. And some matching games. It says there are coloring pages and more things on the website but I haven't checked it out yet.

So far it's pretty fun even if a bit challenging.

I am taking it too. I went ahead and got my book which came with CD's and a small book which will become my second Bible (lol). I have already started looking over it and listening to the CD's also. My book came with flashcards, so they will go everywhere with me too.

Good luck to you.

I took Med Terminology last semester online. I think it's a great class! TexasAngel, I'm just curious as to the title of the little book that is soon to become your second Bible.

Don't you think that investing in a good Medical Dictionary would be sufficient enough at this point after you already completed your A&P classes successfully?

It is a small book called "A Quick Reference to Medical Terminology".

By the way, what do you feel it will help you as you go into the nursing program? I just think it will, and I think the instructors may expect us to have somewhat of an understanding of the terms they will use.

It may be sufficient to do that. I do have a med. dictionary which will also help, but as I said in my PM, A legal asst. wouldnt make it very long without a firm understanding of legal terminology, so I just feel a nurse would be much better equipped with a firm understanding of medical terminology and the different parts of the words.

It sure wont hurt to take the class, and it will probably help me understand a lot of things the instructors wont delve into unless interrupted. I for one, dont like to do that unless absolutely neccessary.

I guess some nurses, or nursing students would be better to answer that question. I am not there yet. ;)

Medical Terminology is not that bad. The book you using is the same one that I used when I had when I was in an RT program. It's a very good book. the only rough part (if you can call it that) is knowing when to use the correct term. By that i mean the same "English word" can have 3 medical terms, so you have to know when to use the correct one.

I never did any of the on line stuff... but I think I have close to 500 flash cards...

Gotcha, I was thinking of the Cyclopedic med. dictionary, but it isn't really a small book. Unless you compare it to an Anatomy book then it is. ;)

The Division chair of Allied Health (She is an RN) at my college recommends taking it, but it isn't a requirement. I took it before I even spoke to her about it. I figured that it couldn't hurt.

:lol2: Well, then I guess my purse is really big. My reference book fits into my purse. I think that and my flashcards will be as essential as my lipgloss and wallet.

I think Tabers Medical Dictionary is a good investment..I also took Med Term last semester and I learned so much in that class, I couldn't imagine starting the nursing program without it. Good luck,

oh an in the Tabers you can look up ANYTHING and get a clear explanation, from what i've heard, at my school you need it anyways during the nursing, so why not buy it early?
