I have a question my husband and I are trying to figure this out. I am in nursing school first year. One of our friends since finding out I was in school has been sort of competing she said she is a med tech and makes like 20.00 an hr does anyone have any knowledge on this career?
oh and sorry that many people dont know of your position alot of times I see people who are in health care have never worked in a facility before that they graduated or before they started there job. Alot of times you really dont know all the different positions. I know at my facility we dont have medicine techs but at the place where I am doing my clinicals we do but I had never heard of a medicine tech
This is a link to a thread about Medication Nurse Assistants. They are not the same thing as a medical technologist by a long shot.I am a med tech, so let me fill you in:
Medical technologists have a bachelor's degree and must pass a national certification exam. We generally have coursework in organic chemistry, biochemistry, biology, math and physics as well as specialized training in hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, hemostasis, blood banking and immunology. We can work as a generalist when we graduate or specialize in one of the aforementioned areas.
Medical laboratory technicians have a two-year associate's degree and also must pass a certification exam. Their scope of practice varies by state and by employer. In some cases they are restricted to doing automated testing, and in others they can perform all the same duties as a med tech.
Ok, sorry for the rant! It just drives me crazy that so many people in healthcare don't know who we are and what training we have.
yes...you are correct. I DID confuse the two. Lack of knowledge and attention to detail on my part.
Did not intend to offend.
ok see this must have been misunderstand not a medical technologist just a med tech( a person who only passes medications) thats all she hasnt had any schooling we are not sure if she is even a cna oh I know a medical technilogist can make good money but a medicine tech( a person who only passes meds) of what they would make. I heard they were cna's licensed to pass meds
that was my initial understanding of your post...I am not quite sure what a Medical technologist does, but a medication tech...one who just passes meds....well, if you visited the thread i referred you to then you get the gist.
If she is trying to sway you towards being the latter then I would just laugh and go about my business with nursing school. It was YOUR decision to go, so do not get upset when others try to tell you "what you should have done..." or "if it was me..." type statements. One usually thinks one's own profession is the best. And others may have superiority complexes that want their friends to stay on equal levels or below.:)
oh I never even thought twice about changing my profession I have wanted to be a nurse since forever and I want to continue and get my msn there are so many opportunities in nursing that I would never change I think it is just funny how people are and I didnt believe her for one second on how much she made I just wanted to know if anyone reallly knew how much a medicine tech makes and now that I am almost sure they are cna's with a license to pass meds I know they dont make anything and I was telling my husband there is no way someone in a nursing home is making 20.00 an hr without a degree. Absolutely ridiculous
If we are talking about Med aides in LTC then she is feeding you a line of bull. Med Techs make more in the range of $10 to 12/hr . Sounds like she is extremely jealous of the fact that you are in a BSN program. They carry a certification and in Texas must be a CNA first. My advise to you is stay right where you are get your BSN and pay no attention to this non-sense . She is trying to bring you down.
