Med Surg - Boring Work in USA

Published

Well I took a job in Med Surg, I am very bored at work, It is like working at a Nursing Home. All I do is give out meds and chart. Pay is good but the work is mundane and no challenge

aw, babe, you'd have to move the the big, bad US of A. Some of my coworkers tried working in Texas in the '90s. One came home before the contract ended because of "working" conditions.

Canada wants to keep her nurses.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem that way!! :sniff:

I don't even care where the OP is originally from at this point. It's just so unfair that in life people who are eager to start a job they can put their heart into couldn't even get the chance to get that job they deserve because the ungrateful ones end up getting the job they openly admit as well-paying yet calling it "mundane" and "boring". I hope the OP does a good job hiding her true identity because statements made on the internet are in the public domain and posts calling one's job as boring can have negative consequences if an employer happens to find them.

Excellent point Juan. No one should say anything about an employer on the internet that they wouldn't want the employer to confront them with, one way or the other.

Yeah know what you mean! Its like you never really wanted to be a nurse in the first place, its not really your "thing" but it was your ticket out. Too bad for your patients and co-workers.

ps I do not think the employer is the complaint, just a subjective thought about the work.

May I offer a more positive comment? :)

If you're job is merely giving out medications and you find more time on your hands, go back to what you learned in nursing school. There are so many nursing therapies that can be done to your patients which can speed up their recovery. Even a chat with them can do wonders. Ask your co-nurses if they need help, they can use an extra pair of hands.

Are you only allowed to dispense medications? I assume not, as US nurses have so many shoes to fill. If you are not happy with your unit, talk to your super, assuming s/he is understanding, if not just suck it up.

You are indeed in the minority here, so many nurses without jobs would rather be "bored" than jobless. Many are also dead beat and bone tired from work and it is sooo unlikely for an RN to just sit around on a shift.

Make everyday a day for learning and giving.:redbeathe

Oh, I know that she is likely not complaining about her employer at all. My point is an employer can interpret such comment in a negative light. For instance, there's been documented incidences of people posting that they are bored at work in their facebook status and when employers find out they confront the employee and say something like "we're not paying you big money to sit around and be bored all day, you must not be doing what you're supposed to do so let me show you the door".

There are plenty of unemployed nurses that would be glad to take your job if you find it too boring.

They need to learn how to be more effective in their job search. Be flexible it's the key to sucess

I'm wondering what the OPs co-workers would say about her performance on the job. Does she go that extra mile, or is just there to chart and pass meds, delegating everything she can?

I also wonder what your co-workers say about your perfomance on the job and your attitude :lol2:

I'm one of those new grads without a permanent job...where should I send my resume?

Check out Parkland Hospital in Dallas, County Hospital they have many New Grads Job Posted

I just don't know what they will think about your training in Canada

I agree that, if you find working here so "mundane" and "boring," you are certainly free to go work in some other country where you might find the work more stimulating and enjoyable. There are plenty of unemployed USC RNs who would be happy to have your job.

If a USC RN does not have a job in the nursing field then it's thier own fault, they need to get out and job hunt and be flexible.

Instead of getting on Internet Boards and crying about "I can't find a job"
