what is meant by experience?

what i really mean is if i worked for four years in homecare and in a nursing home as an lpn and 1 year as an rn in a nursing home and homecare, can i apply for a hospital as a new grad or would that be considered experience? any info greatly appreciated because when i went for an interview some time ago the person doing the interview stated we are only hiring experienced nurses, no new grads.

i understand that, and did not mean to imply you didn't have any skills. i think it would depend on what area you are applying for- if you're in the er, chest tubes, level one infusers and giving blood probably might be totally new. if you're applying for a medical type floor, then it might be totally different.

i'm sorry... i know you are not trying to be insulting but i have to respond. where do er nurses think the chest tubes and infusions go after transfer from the er?? they do not all ended up in the icu... or if they go there initially guess where they end up afterwards??? the medical surgical floors. so if these skills you listed regarding the er would be "new" to the op if starting in the er, i guarantee you that they will be new to the op if he/she starts on the floors.

we get your critical drips, chest tubes, blood transfusions, tpns, ng tubes.... etc. the only thing i do not get are the vent patients.... that is all.. i cannot say that other ms floors do not get them. i am a new grad and apparently in my main er, the new grads have not touched or done as much as i have done yet... not to say that they never will... of course they will, but the ms floor new grads hit the floors running. we don't have a choice; there is not an owie/small boo-boo and/or a these-patients-are-stable-and-being-transfered section on the floors.

exactly. i understand the medical floors might get some drips (although ours don't get many drips on general medical- if they need a big drip, they're on tele or the unit).

some of the skills the op mentioned (suctioning, feeds, etc...) are things you will find in home health, ltc, medical, icu, er, and are things the op is probably skilled at (while a new grad without "experience" isn't). the chest tube, blood admin, complex drips- given the work history the op provided, that's probably not something she's (he?) is very experienced in.

i think what i've tried to get to (in total with my posts on this thread): the op has experience. there is critical thinking and time mgt. experience. the op has experience in some skills that the new grads will not, but there will be skills in the hospital setting that will be new to both the op and new grads. regardless, i'd say experienced.

I am she and thanx for the posts. Blood transfusions, chest tubes will be completely foreign 2 me
