MDC *Generic F/T* Fall 2011 ;-D

Published

hi and congrats to all of us! i made this thread so we could all exhange info for out ft cohort. that way we won't get mixed up with the other p/timers and ao track! congrats to them too!

for those who are just tuning in:

  • our orientation is july 18th, the ati assessment is july 19. mark your calendars!
  • we do need to get titers for 2 tb's, mmr, varicella and hep b is highly suggested! i think hep a too!
  • the program is 4 semesters. we graduate in december 2012!!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah:
  • we have to turn in all our paper work for orientation, which includes our drug screen, health record, background check(i think they receive this from the actually company though)
  • make your ati account!!! atitesting.com

what i have left to do:

  • get my drug screen and 2nd tb! should go tomorrow.
  • uhhh all my titers actually
  • my unform--although i've already gotten my skirt for clinicals (don't wear pants), i don't have the top or lab coat!!!
  • get my books-- i've gotten supplementals like an nclex book and stuff but not the actual texts.

what i have done to get ready:

  • i am going on a diet! healthy meals all day! i don't want to gain 10+ lbs--don't like the idea of being an unhealthy nurse lol
  • going over some, but not all a&p--mostly bones, muscles, heart, endocrine, and stuff like that.
  • cleaning out my room to make more space.
  • i got an extra desk--its big and spacious for those late night study sessions. i have another one but its small. mostly for the computer. but it has lots of shelves for my "enjoyment books".
  • i am cleaning my shelves(i have lots) and organizing the books by subject (anatomy, physio, patho, bio, chemistry, dictionaries, etc) and as time goes by, i'll put the nursing books as follows: (fundamentals, health assessments, pharmacology, patho, medsurge, specialties, references/dictionaries, review books)
  • i'm cleaning my filing cabinet out but i am making copies of all my important documents, including my health record incase mdc loses it, lol. so i'll have files for my health docs, extra copies of my other valuable docs(house docs, car docs, insurance etc), and drug screen results. i'm also going to keep file of my ap notes. this is all for simplicity!!!
  • i'm going to buy those under-bed storage bins to store my extras-- extra back packs, extra office supplies, and my sewing supplies(yes i love crafts)
  • make sure my dental appointments and my dog's shots are up to date!!!
  • i printed a ton of "grocery list/menu planner" sheets. i am going to put it on a magnetic clipboard and put it on my white board. every week or month i am going to pick out a day just for meal planning and grocery shopping. i am going to work it out so that the first semester i only have to go shopping twice a month. most of my meals, if they turn out alright lol, will be freezer meals.
  • i think i need to buy a mini freezer lol
  • i'm going to do all my fun stuff before school starts. i want to go to the zoo and see some museums and other geeky stuff with my mum. might not be able to for a while :crying2:

what other misc stuff are you doing to organize your life? i *love* organizing :redbeathe any tips would be great!!!!!can't wait :D :yeah::nurse::redbeathe:eek::p:rolleyes::D:clown:

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know where to take the CPR/BLS class for certification that is not too expensive and before the 21st and 22nd of this month. I was not able to take at MDC.

I just checked for you and there is one CPR/BLS class available at MDC before the 21st. It's saturday 7/16 at the medical campus 8:30am - 2:30pm and is $69. To make it easy to find the reference number for that class is 651578. Hope that helps! :)

Guys, our orientation is still on the 18th and 19th right?

After reading that post saying full time was changed to 21st and 22nd I wanted to verify what was going on too and they told me the same thing (they being the nursing department) that our orientation is still the 18th and 19th and Homestead orientation will be 21st and 22nd.

Hey at least we're all getting the same answers when we ask them now! :yeah:

Monday...Yippeeeeeee :cheers::clpty:

I just realized we are days away from ORIENTATION!!! It felt like just yesterday that I was stressing finding out if I was in or not! AHHH!!!!:bugeyes: I think the reality is just hitting me now..:lol2:

EXXXX CCCIIII TIIING!!! :nurse:

Can't wait to have no life and just have my head stuck inside a book...most people I know think I'm crazy when I get excited about reading but I love learning

My kids sit with me and "study" whenever I do..My two year old "cuh-yerz" (colors) and my six year old tells me to give her any word to spell.. last time I was studying for philosophy and gave her that word, end result "flasafy", was her spelling..too cute.:)

Sorry for rambling but YAAAYY!!!!:D Who's as excited as me?!?!:yeah:

ROFL that is so CUTE!!!!!!! Flasafy!!! :) :) :) Cutie pattoooootttie.

I'm totally freaking out and can't wait to be classmates with you guys!!! It's going to be a rollercoaster but I really think we are ahead of the game here--since we are sharing all these tips right from the start. That's great that we can keep eachother accountable :)

That is too cute!! My kids are 17 and 20, so the response I get when I want to share what I'm learning runs more like this "MOOMM, it was a simple question!" or "Oh no, here she comes with the flashcards, quick - hide!" :lol2:

And I am super excited and super nervous!!! :smiley_aa:hpygrp:

hello, everyone! what a crazy few days with orientation (accelerated) and trying to get various things resolved...

but now to something that is probably on everyone's mind: costs. after getting the list of required textbooks and supplies, costs are rising rapidly! i put together a list of all costs from start to finish (this is a first draft, so, people, please add if i forgot something )

tuition (the biggest) - $5200

books and office supplies - $1000 (this one can vary, depending on how many used books you can find, but i pretty much just plugged in new book prices from various online sources like ebay and amazon)

nursing supplies - $350 (includes full uniform-120, shoes-50, nursing kit-100, stethoscope-80)

pre-admission costs - $300 (things like cpr class, blood tests, vaccines, background check; this may be much higher if you need more vaccines)

nclex registration - $200

nclex review books - $200

total - $7250 (+/- a few hundred, depending on many of the factors listed above)

also, for books, there are a ton of extra study guides (both for classes and nclex) that may help, so budget another $200 if you think you will be getting a few of those.

i know finances are a pain to worry about, but i hope this helps some people in budgeting

I'll be at that CPR class on Saturday at North campus! I had an accident on my way to the Homestead one last Saturday so I never was able to take it. Who's going to this Saturday's class??

Oh no!:( Are you ok? Hopefully you're not too sore because you'll be doing lots of compressions on Saturday. The worst part is the beginning because you imagine 6 more hours of practicing but it gets easier as the day goes on.

Do you guys want to start a roll call today? It might take most of the weekend for everybody to see this thread and put their name on the list..So, if you want to touch base at orientation, put your name on the list and we will decide how and where to meet before orientation. Let's go in strong in support we'll have a leg up as we begin our odyssey of next 16 months!! :stdnrsrck:

Do we sign in using our names or our handles?

Name Grettel

i will be attending homestead campus full time program
