MDC *Generic F/T* Fall 2011 ;-D

U.S.A. Florida

hi and congrats to all of us! i made this thread so we could all exhange info for out ft cohort. that way we won't get mixed up with the other p/timers and ao track! congrats to them too!

for those who are just tuning in:

  • our orientation is july 18th, the ati assessment is july 19. mark your calendars!
  • we do need to get titers for 2 tb's, mmr, varicella and hep b is highly suggested! i think hep a too!
  • the program is 4 semesters. we graduate in december 2012!!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah:
  • we have to turn in all our paper work for orientation, which includes our drug screen, health record, background check(i think they receive this from the actually company though)
  • make your ati account!!! atitesting.com

what i have left to do:

  • get my drug screen and 2nd tb! should go tomorrow.
  • uhhh all my titers actually
  • my unform--although i've already gotten my skirt for clinicals (don't wear pants), i don't have the top or lab coat!!!
  • get my books-- i've gotten supplementals like an nclex book and stuff but not the actual texts.

what i have done to get ready:

  • i am going on a diet! healthy meals all day! i don't want to gain 10+ lbs--don't like the idea of being an unhealthy nurse lol
  • going over some, but not all a&p--mostly bones, muscles, heart, endocrine, and stuff like that.
  • cleaning out my room to make more space.
  • i got an extra desk--its big and spacious for those late night study sessions. i have another one but its small. mostly for the computer. but it has lots of shelves for my "enjoyment books".
  • i am cleaning my shelves(i have lots) and organizing the books by subject (anatomy, physio, patho, bio, chemistry, dictionaries, etc) and as time goes by, i'll put the nursing books as follows: (fundamentals, health assessments, pharmacology, patho, medsurge, specialties, references/dictionaries, review books)
  • i'm cleaning my filing cabinet out but i am making copies of all my important documents, including my health record incase mdc loses it, lol. so i'll have files for my health docs, extra copies of my other valuable docs(house docs, car docs, insurance etc), and drug screen results. i'm also going to keep file of my ap notes. this is all for simplicity!!!
  • i'm going to buy those under-bed storage bins to store my extras-- extra back packs, extra office supplies, and my sewing supplies(yes i love crafts)
  • make sure my dental appointments and my dog's shots are up to date!!!
  • i printed a ton of "grocery list/menu planner" sheets. i am going to put it on a magnetic clipboard and put it on my white board. every week or month i am going to pick out a day just for meal planning and grocery shopping. i am going to work it out so that the first semester i only have to go shopping twice a month. most of my meals, if they turn out alright lol, will be freezer meals.
  • i think i need to buy a mini freezer lol
  • i'm going to do all my fun stuff before school starts. i want to go to the zoo and see some museums and other geeky stuff with my mum. might not be able to for a while :crying2:

what other misc stuff are you doing to organize your life? i *love* organizing :redbeathe any tips would be great!!!!!can't wait :D :yeah::nurse::redbeathe:eek::p:rolleyes::D:clown:

I don't know if anyone would be interested, but I found the short sleeve and long sleeve tissue t-shirts to layer under the scrubs for $9.99 in white and other colors. These are so comfy and not too warm, which is my main concern. I found them on target.com :nurse:

Good question! I've been asking that same question since the beginning of these threads, but haven't gotten an answer yet. I would like to know if the iTouch is allowed. I know alot of hospitals don't allow phones, like the iphone, but what about the itouch?

I think we are allowed ipods at clinical. I am sure no phones are allowed.

looking at it, i think i am going to get one off ebay or something. 32 gb looks like more than enough. 16gb would have been perfect though =/

have you taken a look at nursing central by unbound medicine? its sooo awesome :o its an app suite with davis' drug guide, diagnostic test, taber's dictionary, and some diseases book. its like 150 bucks but worth it :)

I think that the 32 gb will be just fine. I will look on ebay as well. I haven't heard of nurse central but it sounds perfect! I agree, it is absolutely worth it!

i loved when on eagles wings shared the list of things to do. it gave me ideas. hopefully this list will give others ideas, or if you see that i've forgotten anything, please let me know!:clown: this is my list of things i've done/ordered:

  • shoes (crocs and dansko - expensive, but if they are comfortable and keep me on my feet, worth it! one pair of each
  • layering t-shirts for under the scrubs - tissue t's - long and short sleeve - target.com
  • voice recorder

  • scrub pants
  • compression socks/stockings
  • itouch
  • stethoscope

  • scrub pocket organizer (for bandage scissors, penlight, pens, tape)
  • the basic stuff that goes into the pocket organizer (see above)
  • nclex review books, diagnosis book, davis drug guide, rnotes - nurses clinical pocket guide, etc
  • finished steps for orientation
  • bought a bookshelf - rearranged the others
  • cleaned out and organized file cabinet

still to do:

  • stock up on frozen precooked meals (label with name and date) - enough for the first couple of weeks of school (invested in a small freezer)
  • try to cook on weekends for the next week or two and freeze meals
  • try to stock up refrigerator and pantry so i don't have to do groceries for at least 2 to 3 weeks
  • go to dentist, get my cleaning done
  • stock up on school supplies and organize in a giant under-the-bed tupperware (have to wait for orientation to get an idea of what to get)
  • clean out/organize documents in my computer hard drive and get ready to make new files for classes
  • organize closets for scrubs, shoes, etc. - make everything easy access

BTW Whenever you need more and Target doesn't have, Gap has AWESOME white long sleeve and short sleeve shirts. I think they are called "Favorite T's" and come in crew neck and v-neck. About $10 :) I got two but I just might get more because they are so buttery soft lol

and what brand of compression socks did you get?? I'm still debating what brand :|

Hi! I'm a purchaser for a medical supply and pharmaceutical company and the brand I see the most bought is Futuro (3M) anti-em socks. Other than those, on amazon they sell Medline brand which works as well and costs a little less ;)

Oooh! I think they sell those in Navarro!!! I'm so going this week, hehe. I just wonder if they are opaque enough?

I have an 8gb iPod touch from 2008 (2nd gen?) and it's one of the best things I ever bought. I originally got it to watch movies on long flights. A few months ago I got an iPad and a Kindle and to tell you the truth I never use them (too bulky). The iPod touch is perfect because it is so small. I don't think you even need much memory because apps don't take anything compared to movies.

An example of why the iPod touch is so perfect is when I was taking my A&P lecture class at Baptist Hospital, before a test I would walk around that lake and use a flashcard app. The only hesitation I would have is that if they ban phones, the iPod touch looks just like a phone. Every time I use it, people think I am using a phone.

I think the only advantage to the new one it is HD resolution and has camera and microphone. I can use Skype on my old one if I plug in a microphone. But on the new one you can use Facetime (if you are accessing wifi) and it's easier to use like a phone. But if you don't need the camera, the 2nd gen model works fine.
