Hi guys! Who else is applying for MDC Fall 2011?
I am also applying for FIU-- I was accepted last year to MDC but for financial and personal reasons could not attend. :'( Who else will be applying to Generic FT? Please state what program you will be applying to!
I will be taking the TEAS sometime in March, in which I will also be taking the HESI A2 for FIU. So I might as well be studying for both, lol. Anybody taken the TEAS at MDC? Share your experiences here! :) I will be using a general book for nursing school entrance exams... it's by Barron... and I will be studying my math from a nursing calculation book, and my sciences from my anatomy, biology, and other notes. Is it true there is geology on the exam? How irrelevant... lol
Well good luck to us all! :heartbeat
lol - I found a decent one on allheart.com. It lights up, has military time, and is easy to see. But, I figure that I should have another as a back up for clinicals, or make the white one the backup. I don't own any other watches, so if that one would break, I would be in big trouble! So, I guess I will look for another one in a different color. Have you ever thought of digital? I've read that some nurses will use the alarm setting for keeping track of stuff for their patients.
Pixie,
I met you briefly at orientation today. I'm a part-timer.
YES I've looked seriously at the G-shock "baby G" digital watch. It has vibrating alarms. (good to alert me but not everybody around me). I'm toying with the idea of doing a combination of a lapel watch (for sanitary purposes) AND the G-shock digital watch with vibrating alarms. Only concern with the G-shock is all the buttons. I have a watch with a bunch of buttons and I'm constantly accidentally bumping them. Maybe I could put a cheap timer (with vibrating alert) in my pants pocket instead?
Do RN's log their notes in military time?

Has anyone gone to orientation yet?Mine is scheduled for 7/26. I am kind of nervous. Feedback please
Jaylen,
Yes, and I felt it was most important to
a) turn in the documentation for health (titers, drug tests, etc) so they could tell you what you still needed! Some students thought their papers were complete but did not supply accompanying documentation for proof. Many PCP's were not as helpful in providing detailed documentation.
b) acquire & read the School of Nursing handbook
They are saying our clinical sites will be "set" (not flexible) by zip code. Closest cooperating hospital to your residence. Only way to change the clinical sites is by 2 people agreeing to "swap" locations.

SHOES - I talked to the main speaker at the orientation. I showed her my Merrell Jungle Moc Leather White shoes. (the most comfortable shoe in the world even over sneakers). They have a barely noticeable off-white sole. I asked if she thought they would be suitable for clinicals. She felt they should be acceptable but ultimately it is up to the whomever is in charge of you at the clinical site (is it called a preceptor?) From my inquiry, it is my understanding that it is important to keep my shoes looking very white & clean. Remember she also said to wear your labcoat OVER your clinical jacket while walking in to the hospital?
So, I'm wondering if my preceptor (is this correct terminology?) will want me to buy a pair of all-white sneakers that I can bleach in the wash every week?!

FCAT & Sophie Nicole,
If I knew 6 months ago what I know now... this is what I would have done before being accepted to RN school.
a) get my titers (MMR + varicella), 2 TB tests (4 trips to Dr) and retain the documentation to submit to MDC
b) if I did not have Hep B immunity, start the Hep B vaccines (3 shots over 6 months then a titer to prove immunity)
b) line up a Dr to do a simple/quick physical (get a quote - should be $35-$50)
c) line up a lab to do my 5 panel drug test (get quotes - should be $40). Know that one copy needs to be in a sealed envelope to be submitted to MDC. Might want a 2nd copy for your Dr doing the physical and/or yourself.
d) once accepted into RN school ... immediately do the background check. I did mine 4 weeks ago and just got the results by email a couple days ago.
All the stuff I had little time to do --- while taking challenging classes. It would have been nice to have known about this in advance so less stress.
There is still a 4-page health document that has to be completed by the Dr. doing the physical. They are to review the titers, vaccines, drug test paperwork, etc, & fill in that info on the health document that gets submitted to MDC. And MD/DO/ARNP is to sign this document. I don't think a DC (chiropractor) is acceptable. There was a chiropractor advertising "physicals" but I opted not to try that route because I was concerned about whether or not it would be acceptable.
I was very glad I went to a company that was accustomed to doing the whole enchilada. It made it easier on me... even though I still had to dot their I's and cross their T's and pay a BIT more.
I'm hoping this is helpful to you two.
