Hi guys! Who else is applying for MDC Fall 2011?
I am also applying for FIU-- I was accepted last year to MDC but for financial and personal reasons could not attend. :'( Who else will be applying to Generic FT? Please state what program you will be applying to!
I will be taking the TEAS sometime in March, in which I will also be taking the HESI A2 for FIU. So I might as well be studying for both, lol. Anybody taken the TEAS at MDC? Share your experiences here! :) I will be using a general book for nursing school entrance exams... it's by Barron... and I will be studying my math from a nursing calculation book, and my sciences from my anatomy, biology, and other notes. Is it true there is geology on the exam? How irrelevant... lol
Well good luck to us all! :heartbeat
I have no idea. My guess would be that it's within the school of nursing at MDC. This has to do with transfer credits from other schools correct?
Yeah, I just finished up my masters degree in biomedical science. To satisfy the pre requisites they look through and see what on my transcripts satisfy their requirements. Back in April, I was told everything looked good, except for the human growth and development pre requisite... so I took the CLEP and passed. So that was my last requirement to satisfy. I did that degree audit thing on the student portal and it says a few requirements are not met... one being the chemistry requirement... however, Ive taken three semesters of organic with lab, and 3 semesters of general chem, all with lab, so Im not sure why Im not meeting that requirement. Also, It says I haven't met the anatomy or physiology requirements, however, in my masters program, I took a 6 credit anatomy class with cadaver lab, and a 6 credit physilogy class, with lab. Again, not sure why they are saying im not meeting these requirements. I am just kind of frustrated because the advisors have been telling me everything looks good since april, after dissecting my transcripts. Coming into the middle of June, Im scrambling to figure this out ASAP.
Does anyone know how to talk to the people who evaluate your transcripts?
Yes, the 'Evaluations' office for all MDC is at Wolfson campus (next to 'Advising'). I had to deal with them last year and it was very exhausting. It is basically up to you to follow up on everything they do. If you are transferring old units from other institutions, they are supposed to technically compare original course catalog descriptions to the current MDC requirements. It can get extremely arduous and it seems like they kind of gloss over stuff.
Just keep double checking what they transfer over and periodically ask them for a printout. It's kind of awkward because you have to be very careful how you deal with them since they basically control everything. Also, try to find one of the extremely experienced advisors at the Medical campus to confirm how this stuff is showing up in the system - otherwise if you speak to the part-timers, you might get different answers from each one (like I did).
*p.s. The only pre-requisites with time sensitivity are Anatomy & Physiology (within last 10 years). See under "How Will I Be Selected" here: http://www.mdc.edu/medical/Nursing/rn_faqs.asp

This is definitely good information, however I would definitely go in and check with them face-to-face. The website doesn't mention anything about the TEAS test, which is definitely required now, so make sure you're getting the entire story, and try from as many people as possible.
Any names of seasoned advisors I could talk to?
I don't actually know any of them. I went through a lot of headaches just like you mentioned happened to you. Even after one seemingly experienced advisor told me I have finished the prerequisites, I'm still fully expecting some kind of kink in the system to trip me up again. It is very frustrating, but I don't know what else to do. It seems like the advisors who work back in their own offices are more knowledgeable than the ones who work in those cubicles. I always took whomever they randomly assigned me, but maybe you can ask the front desk for someone "very experienced". Good luck and let us know what happens.

Yes, that is an old page but I referenced it just to include that part about time sensitive courses which I believe is still correct. It gets much more complicated because one advisor told me they used to require other courses (Chem?) to be within 5 years (?), but that changed a while back. Then of course HSC0003 will be required after Aug 2012, so requirements are constantly being tweeked.
Also, even if Evaluations doesn't give you credit for some course from another school, there are other options. They told me something about appealing to the Department Head (relating to whatever class: math, English, etc). The one thing I learned is to try and be flexible and always look for some kind of loophole despite what they tell you.
I can't remember the name of the person that I spoke to when I was having transcript issues, but I remember that she was in the very back of the advising office, and that she was the manager. I had an issue with my general chemistry and advanced math classes not transferring over to the degree audit properly. I thought that this had been taken care of in January when I spoke to an adviser, but it must have slipped through something somewhere. Within a week of speaking to the person in the back, my degree audit was it perfect shape.
I don't think it actually has to do with the transcript evaluation, since they only substitute direct translations of the courses. Any class I had that was a direct translation was transferred without incident to my MDC degree audit, but anything that was higher level than what was required had to be manually entered by an adviser.
Hope this helps!
Paola is wonderful in advising but I know she is very busy and I think mostly see's people by appointment =) but if you can get in with her she really knows what is going on =) good luck
My recommendations would be Dawn or Jennifer, they have both been great. There's another one I like who works in the very back, but her name escapes me at the moment.
Hey Guys!! Guess what?? I just called that nursing dept and they said the email notifications are going out at the beginning of next week!!!!!!!!!!! They said that they are calling students this week to let them know to check the MDC email. I have palpitations as I write this!! I asked him if the notification would also let us know if we weren't accepted and he said yes, so either way we'll know!! Oh GOD please let me be accepted!!!! He had no clue, though, what the GPA cut-off was or Teas score cut-off. Ai yai yai somebody else call and stalk them and see if we can get any more info!!!!
