MCPHS Accel program-any students out there?

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Hi all,

I am starting the MCPHS accelerated BSN program in Worcester next January. I was wondering if there are any students currently in the program on this forum-if so I would like to hear what others think (positive and negative feedback) about the program. Any insight is appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

I know this is sort of an old post, but I wanted to get some opinions from people who have completed the program. Are you happy you chose the (more expensive) accelerated route? I am planning on beginning an ASN program this fall, but it kills me to know that it'll take me at least three more years if I want to get my BSN, when I could do it in 16 months.

Does anyone have any more info on the schedule. From what I understand it is in blocks, right? Like the first 6 months is just classes? Is it typical M-F 9-5? Also, are the clinicals offered day or evening? I appreciate any info on scheduling as I have two young kids.

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I actually started the program Jan 2009 and have loved it so far. Don't get me wrong you spend a ton of time studying and don't have a huge social life...but what accelerated program will give you one anyway. The first semester was set up with 4 classes and a lab. We went to school M-F varying in times from 830-1130 then 1230-330 two days a week, had lab one day a week for 3 hrs, and class half days 2 days a week. Overall it was alot to keep up with the reading for the various classes but you learn your groove. During the summer the class load drops but you do one class for 5 weeks everyday with two half days of lab. It is a great class but it was somewhat alot of info to absorb so quickly. I haven't started clinicals yet but will be starting in about 3 weeks or so. This program is worth it if you're willing to put in the time and effort. The faculty is great, all very well educated and know what they are doing. Some people in our class do work, but I do not as I feel like it would be too stressful. Let me know if you have more questions

Thanks so much Linds1334! Great response. I appreciate the details on the schedule, as that is my greatest hurdle with two little kids. It sounds like you don't have children, but do you know of other people in the program who are managing with kids?? Good luck to you and I may touch base with you again to find out how the clinicals are! Thanks again!

awesome yea...There were a few people who had kids but actually both are going to have to come back because of not getting high enough grades. You can do it with kids if you can put aside enough time to study. Good luck and def let me know if you have more questions and I will let you know how clinicals go

Thanks! I guess that's the reality of having kids. They always come first no matter what. Good luck with your nursing career!

Hey Linds! I just would like to know what the average profile of students in your class were that got accepted (fe gpa, were they career changers, etc) I went to the UMASS Boston Info session and the presenter told us that white females have a disadvantage of getting in(since they are looking for diversity) and 100% of the accepted students are career changers! I am not a career changer and I am a white female so that leaves me out!! Good luck to you and your nursing adventure!

Right now we have 33 or so students. Started with around 40 or so and some left for personal reasons and others didn't maintain the 2.7 cum gpa or minimum C grade in any class to stay. My undergrad gpa was 3.7, but i'm pretty sure that most people just had above a 3.0. We are a younger class, average age is around 25 with a few the high in their young 30s. There are some students that just graduated in 2008, and others who have worked for a few years prior to starting the program. Most of the students are caucasian and female. There is some diversity with asian women and there are 5 males in the class. Hope that helps.

Hey All,

I am starting the accellerated BSN program the end of june this summer because luckily for me I had everything already completed from the Fall 08 and Spring 09 courses so I got squeezed in. I was just reading my syllabus for my first two nursing classes NUR105 and NUR205 and there is a HUGEEE amount of writing that needs to be completed considering its only a 1 month class. I am not a good writer either so I am very nervous. Is anyone else going to be in either the NUR105 8-850 or NUR 205 9-12? If so have you heard anything on the professors difficulty???
