MCG Carpool from Athens area

Published

Hello,

I have just been accepted into Medical College of GA - the Augusta campus. I applied for the Athens campus and was put on the alternate list. I think I will choose the Augusta campus out of fear of never getting into the Athens campus. However, the commute is 119 miles (one-way) to Augusta. Moving is not an option for me. Does anyone in the same situation want to carpool? Does anyone know of a person that commutes to Augusta in general and would like a carpool?

Thanks,

Aimee

Hey! I replied to the other thread, but then noticed you had posted this one, so just in case you don't get the other reply, I wanted to let you know that I am VERY interested in carpooling if I decide to accept the Augusta campus (which I am seriously considering). After I pray on it & decide I will definitely let you know something in the next few days & we can further discuss. Once again, thanks for the proposal of carpooling! If we decide to do it, it will definitely help out with that TERRIBLE commute!

Talk to ya soon,

Mandy

oops! nevermind all! carpooling is not an option for anyone due to the vigorous schedule.

gsc2mcghopeful,

i talked to the pam cook about several questions. here are her replies (in red) since i am sure they will apply to you as well. hope this helps. too bad it puts a serious damper on my carpooling idea...

1. the letter says i have 15 days to decide which acceptance i prefer.

does the 15 days start from the date of the letter? should mcg have the

letter within their hands by the 15th day or is it okay as long as the

response is post marked before the 15th day?

~ ideally we want it back as soon as possible so another student can be offered admission if you chose not to accept. our 15 days starts 1 to 2 days after the date of the letter.

2. i live near athens and the commute to augusta would be very difficult.

unfortunately, moving is not an option as i have a home that will probably

not sell due to the current market conditions and my husband works in

norcross. do you know of any carpool system from athens to augusta? does mcg

have an advertising web page for students to post needs like carpooling?

~ commuting back and forth daily to augusta is not an option with the schedule -- you are in school monday through friday and are often times at the clinical setting on tuesday and wednesday evenings preparing for clinical the following day and in clinical all day. the students who do try and commute somewhere (like home) every week-end are generally the students who struggle in our program. when you accept augusta we expect students to move and reside in the community. having transportation is critical as your clinical may be 10 to 20 miles away from the campus. we do not have the ability to arrange students schedules around each others for carpool purposes due to the number of students, rotation of courses and clinical schedules.

3. what are the chances of actually receiving acceptance into the athens

campus if i am on the alternate list? is there any way i could know where on

the alternate list i am placed? ex: 1st alternate or 50th alternate, etc.

~ there is no way to estimate the probability of whether you will get into the athens campus if you select to remain on the alternate list. you could be #1 and no alternates are admitted as everyone accepted takes their slot or you could be # 6 and be admitted. we do not tell applicants where they are on the list and again it varies per year.

4. the mcg website said that all pre-requisite courses must be complete

before the nursing program starts in the summer. however, the acceptance

letter says the pre-requisite work must be complete by may 22, 2009. is it

okay if my last class (statistics) does not end until june 10, 2009? it

would be complete before the start of the nursing program but not by may

22,2009. if that is not okay, will mcg allow me to take the statistics

course at georgia perimeter college (instead of at athens tech) since that

will end before may 22,2009?

~ all pre-reqs must be completed by june 17th as orientation is tentatively scheduled for thursday and friday (6/18 + 6/19).

5. could i transfer to the athens campus for the second year within the

program?

~ we do not allow transfers from campus to campus. we have a limited number of slots per campus and when we fill them we fill 100%. even if a student was to drop 1/2 way through the program we do not allow transfers for a variety of reasons. so if you select augusta it is that campus for entire program regardless of situation.

6. what is the nursing schedule like as far as times go? is it safe to

assume that i would be in class/clinical/labs from 9-5?

~ no -- do not assume 9 to 5. the schedule is pretty demanding and varies per semester with 14 to 15 credit hours. the summer you are in school for 6 weeks concentrated and you go every day, pretty much all day. during the fall and spring you are in class all day monday, tuesday in class and generally over at your clinical site in the evening getting prepared for clinical on wednesday -- then at the clinical site wednesday then back at the clinical site wednesday evening preparing for thursday clinical then clinical thursday, thursday evening finishing up clinical paperwork and preparing for class on friday. saturday and sunday are generally studying time and working on projects, etc. so it is action packed but short lived for 2 years. you will have the summer off between you junior and senior year.

WOW!!! Sounds scary regardless of whether we live down there or not!!! I talked to someone today & got some of the same responses, but thanks for posting this b/c you asked some questions I didn't.......I was leaning on thinking it wouldn't be a good idea to do with all the work, & just how far it is, but this pretty much nailed the coffin shut! So what do you think you are going to do?!?! I just don't know what to do myself. I have a friend who lives down there, but cannot imagine being away from my husband all week & traveling back on the weekend! We have a house too, so we can't just up & move, & my husband works in Dunwoody....sounds like we are in very similiar situations, huh?!

Yeah I know I am really nervous about the schedule too. My husband and I talked about it and I am going to take the Augusta acceptance. I have worked SOOOOOOOOO hard that I simply can't pass up this oppurtunity. I want a Bachelors too much. However, the moey part is hard. We are going to figure out a way of my staing there either rent a room from a friend or live on campus. Since I can't work my husband is probably going to take up a second job and I will have to take out student loans. My husband works in Norcross so his second job will probably be a weekend job - which means no weekend visits :crying2:

But there are several holidays. We get a week in the summer between semesters so we will use that for vacation and we get almost the entire month of Dec too. However, there will be like 11 weeks straight of not seeing each other. BUt it is only two years. After that I can pretty mch get a job anywhere and we are hoping to move to the beach in NC where we have some property with a trailer on it. Their hospital is ALWAYS hiring RN's. So it may be worth it all in the end. eeeeee!!!!

That is very admirable!! It is nice having a supportive husband, too, & I am speaking from experience, as well as the fact that it is obvious yours is very supportive too!! My hubby said that if he could sell our house, he would in a minute to move...very sweet, but I don't want to do that or give up my new house I love so much....& as you mentioned before: not a good time to sell!! I don't work, either, nor will I be able to after all I have heard. We just have to do what we have to do to reach our dreams, & it will all work out if it is meant to be. We can't let a little bump in the road discourage us!!!!! I still have yet to decide; I am going to pray on it some more. Def. not ruling anything out just yet. Best wishes to you, & I will keep you updated all along, & you do the same!

I GOT IN AT THE ATHENS CAMPUS!!!! PRAISE THE LORD!!!!:bowingpur

Wow! So you declined the Augusta offer??? I can't believe it!

When did you find out? Oh I am so happy and jealous for you! Congrats! When do you start? I can't believe you waited all this time, you must have been FREAKING out! I wonder how they decide? Perhaps you were really on top of the list? Super congrats! :yeah:

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Actually, I just found out on Tuesday! & I was-and still am-FREAKING OUT!!

I had decided that I just couldn't do the Augusta thing, & I mean, I really, really prayed about it, but I just didn't feel like it was the right option. So, I sent the letter back in, along with one I typed up myself, & told them that I wished to be placed on the alternate list. In March, I got a phone call from someone, & she told me that they wanted to offer me a final opportunity to take the Augusta spot b/c (& I quote) it was "highly unlikely" that I would get in Athens this yr. She called TWICE! She was very nice & told me that I was indeed qualified for Athens, but it just got full & was very competitive this yr. She also led me to believe that they don't allow many people to be on the list. But, of course, I don't know how many or where I was on the list b/c I knew better than to ask b/c they aren't allowed to say. I was a little upset after I talked to her, & really didn't think I had a chance, & told her I was prepared to apply again in October, & other places since this was the first place I applied. She was nice, & told me they would love to have me & she hoped to see me next yr......Little did I know I would get a call Tuesday morning!!!! I freaked out when I heard the message! I called, & all the person said was that she wanted to make sure I had all my pre-reqs done if I were to get accepted. When I told her I was done, she told me there was actually a spot available, & asked if I would like to accept!!!!!!!!WOW! Dumbfounded is the best way to describe how I felt, & thankful!! I had totally let go of the notion, & just put it in God's hands that His will be done. As soon as I stopped thinking about it, it happened!!!

Oh, & I start in June to answer your question!

I wish you were going with me! :(

Me too! But that's okay, I am sure there is a reason for me to go to Augusta. I have my apartment ready and I am alomost done with my last pre-req. My name is Aimee by the way and perhaps we will meet in person in a hospital setting one day. Congrats again! I am so glad you were able to get in - victory dance! ooh be sure to stay in contact with your new mcg e-mail - whoo-hoo! [email protected]
