How do I get connected for work?
thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I am trying to get work by my home that is 2 hours away from my school so I can be with my husband over the summer break. Otherwise I would just get a job out here by my school with no problems. That is why I don't have any connections with the hospitals I am trying to apply for. But thanks for the help anyway

How do I get connected for work?
hey all, i am trying really hard to get a summer pca job in the gwinnett/athens area of ga. i am a junior nursing student at mcg and i have a lot of attributes but no experience. every time i try to find a pca job to gain experience i am turned down. it is really frustrating to be told that you need experience and yet no one is willing to give you experience!! i know it is not me because i am an excellent student, i am in the nursing organizations, and the student government - everyone keeps telling me that the only way in is to have a personal or inside connection. i am new to this area and i don't have any family or friends that know of any health industry connections. the nurse recruiters at our school job fair did not help much either. all they did was hand out their name and tell you to fill out the hospital application online - which is usually denied via automatic response which makes me feel like no one has even bothered to read it. i went to my advisor and all she could suggest was to mail a letter of intent to random places with a resume. my professors all tell me that they don't know of anything but i can have a recommendation letter upon request. does anyone else have any suggestions? i would really appreciate some advice! thanks!

I need to interview a currently practicing RN with a BSN or higher
hello all, i am in my second semester at medical college of ga for the rn bsn program. one of my classes requires me to conduct an interview with a currently registered and working nurse that has achieved a bsn or higher. the interview is only 30-60 minutes long and i need the nurse's perception or opinion of their nursing role as a whole (not their entire nursing experience). i would only use the nurse's initials and the interviewee would have to sign a consent form that claims this paper is solely for the use of my education and will not be used in other media sources. i know this may sound crazy but i can't find a volunteer with the stipulated requirements. lpn/lvn's have been more than willing but i can't interview them. many rn's would love to help but just don't have time to spare. i am in ga so i am on the eastern time zone but my schedule is very flexible and i will accommodate your scheduling needs. i am willing to interview via phone, skype, instant message, or in person (if you are in my area). if anyone is interested i would greatly appreciate the help. thanks, aimee hartle son 2011 mcg

MCG BSN Program:
Hi there. I am currently in my third week at MCG's nursing program. Hate to break bad news to you but a low GPA might make it difficult to get into the Athens Campus. At GPC I had a 4.0, was in the Honor Society, on the Dean's List, and was voted Student of the Semester, and I still did NOT get into the Athens Campus. So I am not sure what it takes to get in there. I was put on the waiting list so I decided to come to the Augusta campus. Maybe I didn't get in because my SAT scores were just average. I don't know. Either way, be sure to keep options open. I am married and have a house in the Athens are and I really thought there was no way I could do the Augusta campus. However, since that was the only option I had, I managed to work with it and this arrangement may be for the better. So far it is working out great and I just have to take out student loans and visit the hubby on weekends. But you have to look on the bright side, it is only for 2 years and after all the breaks they give it is actually just a little under 1.5 years. Definitely worth the sacrifice since I will get a BSN RN instead of an ADN at any other school. Plus Augusta is just awesome!! I visited the downtown this past weekend and I LOVE it - has a way better downtown than Athens. (Sorry Athens peeps)

Me too! But that's okay, I am sure there is a reason for me to go to Augusta. I have my apartment ready and I am alomost done with my last pre-req. My name is Aimee by the way and perhaps we will meet in person in a hospital setting one day. Congrats again! I am so glad you were able to get in - victory dance! ooh be sure to stay in contact with your new mcg e-mail - whoo-hoo! [email protected]

Wow! So you declined the Augusta offer??? I can't believe it! When did you find out? Oh I am so happy and jealous for you! Congrats! When do you start? I can't believe you waited all this time, you must have been FREAKING out! I wonder how they decide? Perhaps you were really on top of the list? Super congrats!

Yeah I know I am really nervous about the schedule too. My husband and I talked about it and I am going to take the Augusta acceptance. I have worked SOOOOOOOOO hard that I simply can't pass up this oppurtunity. I want a Bachelors too much. However, the moey part is hard. We are going to figure out a way of my staing there either rent a room from a friend or live on campus. Since I can't work my husband is probably going to take up a second job and I will have to take out student loans. My husband works in Norcross so his second job will probably be a weekend job - which means no weekend visits But there are several holidays. We get a week in the summer between semesters so we will use that for vacation and we get almost the entire month of Dec too. However, there will be like 11 weeks straight of not seeing each other. BUt it is only two years. After that I can pretty mch get a job anywhere and we are hoping to move to the beach in NC where we have some property with a trailer on it. Their hospital is ALWAYS hiring RN's. So it may be worth it all in the end. eeeeee!!!!

MCG Carpool from Athens area
oops! nevermind all! carpooling is not an option for anyone due to the vigorous schedule. gsc2mcghopeful, i talked to the pam cook about several questions. here are her replies (in red) since i am sure they will apply to you as well. hope this helps. too bad it puts a serious damper on my carpooling idea... 1. the letter says i have 15 days to decide which acceptance i prefer. does the 15 days start from the date of the letter? should mcg have the letter within their hands by the 15th day or is it okay as long as the response is post marked before the 15th day? ~ ideally we want it back as soon as possible so another student can be offered admission if you chose not to accept. our 15 days starts 1 to 2 days after the date of the letter. 2. i live near athens and the commute to augusta would be very difficult. unfortunately, moving is not an option as i have a home that will probably not sell due to the current market conditions and my husband works in norcross. do you know of any carpool system from athens to augusta? does mcg have an advertising web page for students to post needs like carpooling? ~ commuting back and forth daily to augusta is not an option with the schedule -- you are in school monday through friday and are often times at the clinical setting on tuesday and wednesday evenings preparing for clinical the following day and in clinical all day. the students who do try and commute somewhere (like home) every week-end are generally the students who struggle in our program. when you accept augusta we expect students to move and reside in the community. having transportation is critical as your clinical may be 10 to 20 miles away from the campus. we do not have the ability to arrange students schedules around each others for carpool purposes due to the number of students, rotation of courses and clinical schedules. 3. what are the chances of actually receiving acceptance into the athens campus if i am on the alternate list? is there any way i could know where on the alternate list i am placed? ex: 1st alternate or 50th alternate, etc. ~ there is no way to estimate the probability of whether you will get into the athens campus if you select to remain on the alternate list. you could be #1 and no alternates are admitted as everyone accepted takes their slot or you could be # 6 and be admitted. we do not tell applicants where they are on the list and again it varies per year. 4. the mcg website said that all pre-requisite courses must be complete before the nursing program starts in the summer. however, the acceptance letter says the pre-requisite work must be complete by may 22, 2009. is it okay if my last class (statistics) does not end until june 10, 2009? it would be complete before the start of the nursing program but not by may 22,2009. if that is not okay, will mcg allow me to take the statistics course at georgia perimeter college (instead of at athens tech) since that will end before may 22,2009? ~ all pre-reqs must be completed by june 17th as orientation is tentatively scheduled for thursday and friday (6/18 + 6/19). 5. could i transfer to the athens campus for the second year within the program? ~ we do not allow transfers from campus to campus. we have a limited number of slots per campus and when we fill them we fill 100%. even if a student was to drop 1/2 way through the program we do not allow transfers for a variety of reasons. so if you select augusta it is that campus for entire program regardless of situation. 6. what is the nursing schedule like as far as times go? is it safe to assume that i would be in class/clinical/labs from 9-5? ~ no -- do not assume 9 to 5. the schedule is pretty demanding and varies per semester with 14 to 15 credit hours. the summer you are in school for 6 weeks concentrated and you go every day, pretty much all day. during the fall and spring you are in class all day monday, tuesday in class and generally over at your clinical site in the evening getting prepared for clinical on wednesday -- then at the clinical site wednesday then back at the clinical site wednesday evening preparing for thursday clinical then clinical thursday, thursday evening finishing up clinical paperwork and preparing for class on friday. saturday and sunday are generally studying time and working on projects, etc. so it is action packed but short lived for 2 years. you will have the summer off between you junior and senior year.

MCG Carpool from Athens area
Hello, I have just been accepted into Medical College of GA - the Augusta campus. I applied for the Athens campus and was put on the alternate list. I think I will choose the Augusta campus out of fear of never getting into the Athens campus. However, the commute is 119 miles (one-way) to Augusta. Moving is not an option for me. Does anyone in the same situation want to carpool? Does anyone know of a person that commutes to Augusta in general and would like a carpool? Thanks, Aimee

MCG BSN Program:
Oh Congrats gadawg!!!! Hoooooorah!! gsc2mcghopeful, I have decided to accept the Augusta camus even though it is 119 mile commute. For one, I have no idea if I am #1 on the alternate list or # 500. And I can't imagine losing my oppurtunity because no one dropped their acceptance. I decided to suck it up, have a REALLY hard two years, but then have bliss for the next 50 or so years in the future. I am very interested in carpooling!!!! If you decide to join us in Augusta please let me know if you would be interested in a carpool at all. Again, Congrats!!!

MCG BSN Program:
Okay all..... i got my letter..... ahhhhhhh I am in!!!:roll ....but.... ohhhhh... it is the wrong campus!:smackingf I applied to the athens campus because I live 30 mins from athens. I got "alterante acceptance" for Athens and I am accepted for Augusta... however I must choose which acceptance. Do I choose Athens and run the risk of not getting in because no one has refused their offer or do i choose augusta and drive 119 mi – about 2 hours 19 mins everyday??? My husband and I will have some serious talking to do over the weekend. Yeah - athens tech is really lame about the weirdest things. I can't get into both schools because my entrance exam scores suck. Athens tech takes the NLN exam which I was in the 79th percentile. The head of their nursing dept told me you have to be in 95th percentile to get in. GPC takes the NET exam which I was in the average scoring range - head of their nursing dept said that might not be good enough to get in. So now I am sooooooooooooooo happy to get into MCG (which is what I wanted in the first place) but I have no idea what to do. I only have 15 days to decide. gsc2mcghopeful, I am sooooooooo sorry about your letter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll keep you in my prayers - you WILL get in, you Will get in, you WILL get in,.....

MCG BSN Program:
It changed on Monday so I was sooo built up to recieve it on Wed, then today, now tomorrow..... I have been obsessing to a point where I am driving my husband crazy! I am so stressed by it because I was told by the nursing heads of both Athens Tech and GPC that I will not get into their programs. MCG is absolutely my first choice but the other schools were my back-up plans. Now I don't have a back-up plan. If MCG says no then I will be so upset. I feel so negative and I am trying sooo hard to be positive - it is hard when 2 out of 3 schools I applied to say no. Because I work full time, it took me three years to finish my pre-requisites. I am in Micro, Chem II, and Sociology right now and all I need is one more class to finish the requirements. It is also really frustrating because I have a 3.9 GPA and I feel it would have been such a waste of my time if I don't get in.:smackingf
