MCG BSN Program:

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

....Just wondering if anyone (who applied for priority admission to the BSN program at MCG) has heard anything??? I have not and am getting a little anxious!

i too went through a lot during my academic career and really capitalized on it in my essay. Experience sets you apart period, no matter how much you may have. It shows them that you know what you're getting into and wont back out once you have your eyes opened a little bit. I wouldnt worry about the vol. experience....just keep your head up!

You got in with W's? That's great! Some nursing school I have looked at won't even think about you if you've made C's or withdrew from classes. Luckily, I've never withdrawn and I'm banking on my essays and shadow experience. I talked a lot in my essays about shadowing because I shadowed in the area that I want to nurse with.

Yes. I decided to go into nursing after changing my major quite a few times . It would have been a miracle if i had graduated without any W's. ha. You will definitely have something on many applicants. I would imagine that most applicants have at least 1 W but maybe I am misinformed?!

I'm not sure. Maybe its just a scare tactic that the schools put out. They act really strict about everything.

In the health field, some go to college knowing that is what they are going to do while others have a story to tell. I think they forgive more than they let on.Out of cuiosity, what schools have you looked at that do not allow W's?

Oh I totally understand. There are many people that I'm in class with right now that have been stay at home mom's and have had different jobs for 30 years and have now decided that the health field is where they need to be. Athens Tech is one that is really funny about low grades or withdrawals. But, that school can be a little weird about everything. The only thing that matters is that you got in and that is SUPER exciting. I bet its nice not having your future up in the air.

I took at class at ATC as a transient student..... I do not know anything about their ASN program but have heard that it is difficult to get into. ATC is wierd about the dumbest things though.

I did the same thing. I changed my mind when I was junior that I wanted to go into nursing. I had always been interested in it and always wanted to go pre-nursing but I was scared it would just be too hard. But im really glad I switched and I loved all my classes. Now I just have to get into nursing school! I also have a couple W's but not in any of the health classes, just a math and Spanish class. Hopefully it won't hurt too much!

I also applied to ATC but I don't think I want to go there now. I just want a Bachelors and since im technically a senior, if I don't get into MCG ill just finish my degree in community health. I probably wouldn't even get into there with what yall are saying about it. Did either of yall apply there as well? I only applied there and MCG.

I only applied to MCG and Emory- but had planned on applying to 5-6 more. As for what was said about ATC, I was only going on what people told me while I was a transient student there during the Fall. I am sure it is not as bad as people make it out to be.. The ASN program is wayy different than the BSN (which is why I have decided to suck it up for another 2 years). If I were you, I would not write ATC off of my list. From what I hear they have a very good program!

I started out at UGA as a music major and had always wanted to go into the health field. So, when I decided that 36 hours a week in a practice room wasn't for me, I decided to get with my cousin on nursing. She is who set me up with shadowing on the L&D floor. I also transfered out to ATC and I HATE it! The staff is so behind on everything and isn't willing to help you. Every semester that I've been here, they've messed something up on my records. I asked them to send an updated trascript to NGCSU last semester and they sent it to North Georgia Technical College. I'm not even sure where they even got the address seeing how I put NGCSU's on the request form. As far as the nursing program is, I've heard mixed reviews on it. I have some friends that are in it now and some of them really don't like it. Last year I applied and didn't get in which was fine but a girl with worse NLN scores and GPA than me did get in. But there were also some girls with a much better NLN score and GPA but also didn't get in. I have applied this year but I don't want to go there. My dream school is North Georgia so that's where I'm hoping to get in. Don't let what I say discourage you. This is just one person's opinion right now. I do wish you the best of luck with this because we're all sitting in the same boat right now. We all want to be nurses but we're just waiting on that one magical letter.

Thanks for all the advice :) I really only applied to ATC because I felt I needed to apply to more than one school. I have been in school almost 4 years now so I want to end up with a bachelors. I feel like an associates would not be worth all the work I have already put in. I was nervous about ATC in the first place. I really want to go to MCG because I feel like the program would be perfect for me plus my mom graduated from there, so she would love for me to go there too!! I will just try for a masters after I complete my bachelors at my current school if I don't get in this time around.

Oh do you think already having a completed minor will help at all? I have a minor in Psychology, so I was just curious? Thanks ladies!!
